View Full Version : Will T-56 6-speed bolt up to 3800 Series II?
xdarkforce Jan 11th, 09, 10:06 PM I have a 1998 Camaro with 3800 Series II,i got it when i was 17,its my first ride... havent been able to pour any money in it yet,but looking to beef it up. Rather than just doing a LS1 swap,i would rather keep the V6. It came with a V6,and its staying with one.
I'm looking to swap out the whole entire tranny and driveline with a T-56 6-speed,SS driveline, and SS rear-end. Just wondering if the Tranny would bolt-up. I think it will because my current tranny is the 4L60E,I thought about just going with an overhaul and keeping the auto, but love the manuals.
I'm wanting to get 450hp-600hp out of my engine...what should i do?
TJS69 Jan 11th, 09, 10:17 PM I'm not sure that the T-56 will bolt in. I'm thinking NO. The V-6 automatics have a different bolt pattern, than the V-8's do. I believe the T-56 only came behind a V-8... so NO.

I'd call Mcleod and Lakewood and see if they have a bellhousing for your engine. If they do, this shoud be a doable swap.
bearcat44 Jan 12th, 09, 09:49 AM You'll need to check out input shaft length as well as I think this will be your biggest issue.
Gonna be real honest with you on your last expectation of 450-600 horse. First the t-56 should handle it (assuming it will work and your not going to launch it hard). However, the SS rear is only a 7.5" 10 bolt and will die quickly with that amount of power no matter what you do to it. Getting a v6 to 450-600 horse is unreasonable without a COMPLETE tear down because your going to need boost of somesort. That calls for forged rods and pistons and maybe even crank.
I understand that you want to keep it a 6 but with the amount of money your going to have into this thing just to keep it a v6 will be ridiculous. Custom bellhousing, probable input shaft replacement, having a shop redo your engine with forged internals, turbo/supercharger, new rearend when that 7.5 dies etc...
The bottom line is the 3800 series wasn't designed to make power and your going to have a hard time keeping it reliable and powerful within a decent budget.
67SS&99SS Jan 12th, 09, 11:54 AM You can get a complete ls1/t56 for 3-4 grand and there is no custom fabbing required to install it in your body. I understand you want to keep the V6, but getting that much power out of it would cost a ton more than a complete LS1 swap with upgraded heads, cam and intake. I would also get the complete k-member and trans cross member. The rear in your car is the same as what is under a LS1 Camaro with the exception of it not having a posi. Most V6 cars got 3.23 gears I believe. Don't waste money on a stock rear, upgrade it with a 12 bolt or 9" from moser or strange.
