View Full Version : Shift kit? Chirps from 1st to 2nd
powerplay Nov 23rd, 01, 10:01 AM I have a 69 camaro ss backed by a th 350. the engine is a stock and old 350 and i have 3.73s. When I get on it my tires will chirp when shifting from 1 to 2nd. I think it shifts pretty well but i have no idea if it has a kit or not, and if i got one how hard would it really shift then.
CamaroNOTcamero Nov 23rd, 01, 11:08 AM it depends on which kit you plan on buying, a full race kit would shift like a B*tch, but a towing or street kit wouldnt be to hard, sounds like you already have a mild one in there.
BreathWeapon Nov 23rd, 01, 02:42 PM I had one in my last tranny, and it shifted HARD. I mean, it shifted stiffly even under casual driving; rather unpleasant. I blew that tranny up, and I had a fellow build me a new one. He has a strong reputation, and he assured me he could build a TH350 without a shift kit that shifts like it has one in it. He was right. The tranny now shifts nicely under part throttle, but with the pedal down, the tires cut loose through all shifts. Even under the mild 250 HP, I have to be careful between 1st and 2nd, because even on mildly damp roads, the tires can break free and spin like mad.... on 225 tires too. So, if your tranny squawks 'em already, you don't need a shift kit. It would only make for a very choppy ride to 7-11.
b-boy Nov 23rd, 01, 05:44 PM Another thing to keep in mind: The looser (smaller) your torque converter is, the softer your tranny will shift, and vice-versa,i.e. a stock converter with a full manual/full race shift kit will feel much harsher than when you put in a 10" street/strip converter, especially under part throttle. When you are getting on it, though, they seem to even out alot.

Turrisi2 Nov 23rd, 01, 09:02 PM I have a 1991 RS and it used to chirp when going from 1st to 2nd. It doesn't mean you have a shift kit. It just means the car packs some power and has a good tranny.
joesmith69 Nov 25th, 01, 07:23 AM The 700R4 in your '91 shifts alot harder in stock form than any TH350 I've ever driven. My buddy had a completly stock '91RS with a 305TBI motor, and it chirped them on the 1-2 shift. My dad's 77RS with a 305 motor on the other hand, wouldn't ever come close to breaking the tires loose between shifts with the TH350. IMHO, it sounds like this guy has a mild shift kit in his tranny already.

I had mine done by Chris at AAAtlas Transmission here in Calgary. If you really wish, I can give you more details, but I assume it is a bit far from your location.
