View Full Version : 2002 Z28s Not Powered as advertised?

Has anyone heard about this? I was approached by a guy with another 2002 Z28 who told me he had his dynoed and the HP was only 280. I didn't ask about torque or RPMs. I'm not engine savvy at all. He said he did some mods to it to get another 75 HP. He said there is talk of a class action suit. Any comments?

Doesn't sound too far off to me. I am sure he had the car chassis dyno'd instead of pulling the engine and dynoing it like the factory does. Besides, if he went to 3 different dyno's he would probably get 3 different results. I don't think a class action suit would stand a chance.

I think that might be rear wheel HP and not crank shaft HP

280 HP X 20%(auto) = 350 hp
280 HP X 15%(stick) = 330 hp

check out this site if it was true I think it would turn up here: http://www.slpeng.com/slpforum/index.html

The guys are right!! 280 hp at the rear wheels (rwhp) is right on for the 02 Z28. An 02 SS will be right around 300-310 rwhp if you need something to compare it against.

the only time I seem to get the SS is when it's time to wash and wax or the tank is empty! http://www.camaros.net/forum/confused.gif

Man what a nightmare it was to make her understand " you can take it to the grocery store!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" But she is starting to understand now. Seems the more she drives it the more she is coming to appreciate it. But you are right. She still cant comprehend proper appearance care. She would want to wash it the middle of the afternoon with my luck. Then we would have another argument! http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

my wife keeps to her minivan where she can feed my 3 and 5 yr olds all the cream cheese sandwiches and gold fish they can throw. I drive the Z28 exclusively. What difference does it make what time you wash your car?

Sorry, you're going to have to spell it out for me. What's wrong with washing the car in direct sunlight?

Water drops are like a magnifying glass on your cars finish. they will eventually burn through! water spots scratch the finish due to the left over deposits when they evaporate.

Unless you use DI water (deionized) you'll run the risk of spotting in direct sunlight. It also causes the water to evaporate and a soap residue can develop and dull the finish.

so, the spider webbing and water drop marks from the one time I washed my car at 5 PM on a sunny July evening are permanent?

Could be but you should try a clay bar treatment and possible a polishing....

Dennis - don't ever use deionized water to wash your car! It's actually very agressive and hard on metals and costs darn near as much as gasoline to make (true DI water that is, R.O. Reverse Osmosis water is much cheaper but not nearly as pure). Believe it or not its true. Distilled water would be OK though. http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

ps. 280 HP at the rear wheels is awesome and worthy of worship for a $25-$30k factory car. Well not quite worthy of worship, but think about it for a sec. I occasionally dip into the 11.9's in my Camaro and I dyno'd only 317 HP at the rear wheels. Granted I had 380 ft/lbs of torque http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif which helps it get off the line quite nicely.

well, there is no way I'm going to buy water to wash this car. There are not enough hours in a day to get involved with that. I'm mentally prepaired to wax it regularly. What is a clay bar treatment?

I try to dust my car as often as possible rather than wash it,(the 2002) I just wash it in the shade with reg water and I take the spray nozzle off for the rinse. If you let the water flow onto the car rather than spray it The water will sheen off your car and there is less to shammy. Paint care for a piece of automotive history is not for everyone. I certainly dont treat my daily drivers this way. There is some compromise that gets made at some point. I am still learning the do's and dont's. But there a lot of little things that you can do to keep that chevy lookin good that are worth looking into and are not as extreme as buying the water to wash your car with.

Interesting kill story from a friend yesterday. ***EDIT by Admin*** All I can say is that the new SS's as treated by SLP do perform well.

Sorry, we don't advocate "off track kill stories".

It's a little chunk of clay that you rub on a section of your car after spraying the section with the supplied lubricant. Picks up obvious, and not so obvious crud that is embedded in the finish of your car. Makes the car feel noticeably smoother.

Clay Magic made the original, Mother's makes one, and Meguiar's did (not sure if they still do).
