Did you know that in 1974 submissions were sent to Fisher body to provide a feasability study for a hatchback version of the Camaro for the 1977 model year. New rear quarters, roof hinges and cargo floor stampings were among the items that may have been required, but they were instructed to utilise the standard rear window glass if possible to keep costs down. As we see now this did not materialise until the redesign for the 1982 model, and was probably driven by the Nova hatchback that was available around then. Still gives one food for thought....And with that Camaro History 101 is ended for today, thanks for allowing me to post these three briefs on your forum.

You're shortchanging the Vega... the Vega always appeared to have styling inspired by it's F-body brother, and the Vega line included the hatchback from inception in 71.

And who can forget the Kammback 2nd gen concepts? http://auto.howstuffworks.com/chevrolet-camaro-and-pontiac-firebird-concept-cars.htm

Wow, I'm glad they didn't make the Kammback, it kinda looks like an AMC pacer in the back!

Did not mean to short change the Vega, but it is a completely different platform than the F/X Camaro/Nova one, and with similar dimensions and powertrains I felt the Nova was more comparable. I was only trying to inform everyone that the idea for a hatchback was out there way back in 1974, although not used till 1982, talk about future planning. At least prototypes were shown of the wagons, I have never seen pictures of the hatchback if one was even built, it probably was just a paper design study.
