Found a '73 that has a hitch and reenforcement brackets and was wondering if it's factory or aftermarket. Thanks! Be cool to pull a jetski that's painted the same color as the car, (or would it?!)!

View Full Version : Anyone got a pic of a '73 towing package? pulpcowboy Jan 14th, 09, 08:11 AM Found a '73 that has a hitch and reenforcement brackets and was wondering if it's factory or aftermarket. Thanks! Be cool to pull a jetski that's painted the same color as the car, (or would it?!)! Z15CAM Jan 15th, 09, 06:24 PM I made a heavy towing rig for my BBC 70Z. I took a Reese Stage 2 hitch from a 1/2 ton and fabricated brackets that mount the hitch to the bumper bosses. I also built a plate reinforcement bracket behind the bumper mounts that sits on the floor in the trunk and bolts through the frame. I can sandwich the hitch between the rear panel and the bumper but the bumper is extended 1/4" but looks good - if not down right mean. It only takes a few minutes to take the bumper off and mount the hitch with or without the bumper. I can pull a 25ft Reinnel Express Cruiser with no problems. I also installed an extra leaf which is used to adjust rear ride height and firmness of the rear suspension. I suppose air bags could do the job but I don't care for them. I know the majority of enthusiasts believe a hitch on a Camaro is sacrilegious, but Hey Man, a BBC/M22/3.31 posi is perfect for towing and a waste of brute power if all you do is cruise the boulevards with it. People do stare at me when I'm towing my boat and it's neat to smoke the tires a bit when they do. I've thought about fabricating a set of Police Type Nerf Bars for the front anticipating that someone might want to dent my ride - LOL pulpcowboy Jan 16th, 09, 08:09 AM Great! Bet you do get stares! We wanna travel with a pop up camper on our '71 SS but I can't see where there was a tow package that included a factory hitch on any 70-72 camaros but found one in a junkyard still attached to a wrecked '73 and looks factory installed. There was only 28 of them sold but need a pic to make sure it is a true factory installed option. Really apppreciate your input! Z15CAM Jan 16th, 09, 03:23 PM Forget the factory or after market towing packages, they are Tin Foil. Other then implementing a frame/chassis hitch as I've described you can derive an Axel 3 point floating hitch but I've looked into the concept and believe me it would take a lot of improvisation; however, the design is the BEST as it places all the weight on the Axel rather then the chassis and does not require a suspension modification; other, then you might use an air bag to help coustion. If you can fabricate one for a Camaro, all the best to Yah! I suppose the Bumper Hitch would suffice for a light Pop-Up which you intend to trailer but be wary that it could damage the Rear Panel and possibly loose your Load. DjD Jan 16th, 09, 04:15 PM In 1973 RPO ZJ4 is a trailer towing package, the sold 28 of them. I don't think it included a hitch based on the definition "includes hd radiator, extra cooling fan, 342:1 axle ratio which requires a base V8 or the RPO L65 engine and an auto trans" in the white book. So does that leave the dealership installing a GM hitch or was it what ever the local trailer shop could supply? pulpcowboy Jan 17th, 09, 08:32 AM I got a pic if you want to see it. thanks! |
