I came accross this engine on ebay today. I'm not an interested buyer but it did raise a question for me.

Didn't all the performance engines including the SS350 have VIN stamps?

I'll put this one out there for the experts:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/1967-350-cubic-inch-295-hp-engine-for-SS-Camaro-Only_W0QQitemZ230319165100QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotor s_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item23031916510 0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1215|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

Quoted from the seller "cornhuskers":
"You can easily add your VIN because those numbers were put on by hand, one at a time, with numbers similar to those found at a hardware store (unlike the unique, and precisely alligned engine assembly numbers and letters that were put on with a gang/holder). We can even do this for the winning bidder if he/she wants us to at no charge. So this engine is correct for Camaros produced most any time after October 1966."

I don't know I would trust anything they say if they are so flippant about "stamping your own VIN on there". Wonder what else has been stamped by them?

I am interested in this engine and have been watching it. Aside from individual opinions is there some sort of official data on whether this engine is legit or not? Thanks

This line kinda explains it:

"We have both raced Corvettes for 40 years and have held several national drag records. We have 200+ blocks stored away in a number of old buildings – enough to keep us busy until we “really” retire."

I have found that many of the corvette guys accept restamped engines as ok, as long as they are done "right".

**EDIT** - I am NOT agreeing with this, in fact I disagree, as I believe that the original driveline is what made a SS a SS. :)

If I had a car that was missing the number matching engine and this one had the right date codes I'd buy it in a heartbeat. What I wouldn't do though is stamp my VIN into it. I'd leave it as it is. Not only is it wrong in my book but the experts can tell and having the VIN exposed as a fake just makes everything else about the car questionable.
