I searched and did not find a discussion on how to remove the chrome from the qtr windows without breaking the glass.

Any one?

Remove the u-jam seal around the quarter window & slightly lower the window. Gram the top of the window & pull the trim piece off starting from the bottom. They can be a bear to remove & you may need to warm the seal up with a heat gun to get it off. I used repops on mine and was happy with the fit & finish. The only issue I had was the holes on the trim piece and the seal didn't line up very good once installed. I used WD-40 to get the seal into the groove on the trim piece (also a bear).

Thanks but, in my case the entire window assembly is out of the car. It looks as if the original has a seal or glop of some type in the groove for the glass.

Bob,

You're correct, there should be a rubber seal between the glass and the chrome trim. The seal makes the trim a "compression" fit to the glass. Like I said, you may have to apply some heat in order to release it from the glass.

I just gently pried mine off with a screwdriver.

It's just an interference fit....no adhesive. But after 40 years, they can be pretty stuck on. Minor heat and major patience.

I got the peice off. Since the window and mechanism where not in the car I shot a very little , and I mean small amount , of lub I use on frozen bolts. I let it sit over night and today I was able to separate the chrome from the window and it left the rubber seal intact on the window using just a moderate amount of continuous pull at the point on the metal trim where the weatherstripping screw goes.

Anyone have a source for the rubber strip ?

The strip usually comes in the chrome repro kits. If you dont have the kit, old fashioned auto window shops might have it, its called window setting tape.

Further to Kevin, If you go to a glass shop, as I did, take the new chrome piece and the glass with you. The rubber comes in various thicknesses, and you want to trial fit to get the correct size. It should be tight, but not too tight. If you use soapy water, it will slide on, and once the water evaporates, it will be tight. Then trim the excess.

I paid a glass guy to put on "Friction Tape",it comes in various thickness for different needs. He charged me $100 for both rear 1/4's and screwed up my new 1/4 Chrome trim in the process.I bought all my rear 1/4 stuff at rick's and was satisfied with it.I am going to replace the one he screwed up and just use 3M weatherstrip adhesive item # 8008 $11.99

These are a real bear to install in the 1/4 trim, I tryed WD-40,White Lithium,Slicone.......alot of elbow grease and a few breaks it took me an hour for 1 trim to mate the rubber..alot of patience it will take

Thanks everyone for the replies. The second one came off easier than the first after sitting the night with the lub on it. Just required a rather gentile pull.
Lub was BB Blaster.
