Hi guys,
I'm curious to hear the difference between flowmaster super 40s versus 44s in a cammed sbc. I have searched all the video sites but have not found a good clip of the super 44s with a choppy idle. Just wanted to see if the 44s are noticably different. Anyone here running the 44s?
thanks

Do you think the 44s will sound similar at idle?I think they will sound the same , my exhaust guy said that the 40s will give me more torque then the 44s.. Either that or i didn't have enough HP and TQ to impress him. Even my new 496 wont impress him, as he has a 7 second Camaro .

Here he is being the crowed pleaser at All Out Pinks, he ran a 8.30s on all motor and 3-weeks after he ran 7.80s.. Nice burn out. Check out the Purble Chevelle after the Camaro vid, the Chevelle ran the Korbell Vet but he jumped.

Thats what I was thinking... guys, 40's are pretty different than the 44's.
imho, the 44's don't sound near as good as any of the 40 series, that red Chevelle on the commercial does not do it for me... A little too glass-pack-e, but I associate glass packs with broken down trucks since everyone has them on everything including their lawn mower in these parts.

This is one of the most decent ones I could find but once you have a motor with that kind of cam profile, they all sound the same if they go through mufflers...

This one sounds mostly stock:

super 40s are very deep sounding. I have them on my cuda. its the best sounding full case muffler that I've heard. i run one chambers on my 99 SS and my 67 SS and they sound great on both cars. I think that the super 40s are just as loud as the one chambers. i looked at some super 44s a while back at the local parts store and to me they look like black painted standard 40 series mufflers.

John,
Thanks for the vids. I also saw them on the tube & felt the way you do. In my opinion, the 40s sounded better than the 44s to my ears. I was hoping someone here was running the 44s that would change my opinion. Unfortunately, the American Thunder kit for 69s now ships with the 44s.

Andy,
You got some mean rides there!

My motor is a 408 SBC, 2.02 / 1.94 (camel hump) heads. The cam is a Lunati #638-30113, Adv. Duration: 290 / 280, Gross lift: .489''/.520'' RPM Range: 2500-6200, Headman headers #65003, 650 Dp, but I'm going to step that up to a 750 Dp, Edelbrock performer intake.

Are you completely sold on Flowmaster?
I think a muffler shop may be able to do a better fitting custom tailored job than a kit, and you can add in cut outs and an x pipe.
I know if I had to do it all over again I would do spintech.
They sound very good on ls1 cars and conventional v8's with bigger cams.
It sounds unlike any other company out there, imho it makes a standard push rod v8 sound like a Ferrari or The newer mustang v8's... just with balls.

Call me old school but I grew up listening to flows. I'm not trying to reinvent the "muscle car" sound but rather I'm trying to recreate the "sound" that I remember from my younger days. I don't race this car so x-pipes and cutouts are not a high priority. I got another car that takes care of those urges.:D

I like flows too. :D I wouldn't worry about cut-outs either, however, it wouldn't hurt to put a x-pipe on it. It will quiet it down just a tad, refine the sound and make more power too. When I did the exhaust on my 67 I went ahead and put a x-pipe on it. I'm glad I did. I've got flowmaster one chambers on it which are a high flow race muffler yet, they are quieter than my cuda with super 40s that doesn't have a balance pipe. Both exhausts are 3" and dumped. Loud exhaust doesn't bother me much as long as it sounds good. :D

I know what ya mean. Flows are prob the most widely used better sounding of the mufflers. although other brands sound great with the right set up.

When I think old school I think flows but I think the actual old school sound is the gardner chambered stuff or glasspacks which imho don't sound very well on first gens. No offense to anyone.

Here is a clip of the spintechs from youtube. They sound some what like flows at idle but once the rpm's are increased it sounds monsterous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y5tHp1exn0

Andy,
Good point on the x-pipe. I'll have to take a closer look at h-pipes versus x-pipes on a chambered muffler.

John(ace's68),
That's one awesome sounding chevelle. I'll agree with you that with the "right" set-up, anyone can meet their ideal sound & performance goals.
