I have a '69 Z/28, I've had an ongoing problem with power steering fluid leaking out what I now know is the cap. I replaced the pump and hoses and still have the leak. It seems the only time it happens is when I pull into my driveway. The driveway is not typical as it is on a slight incline and to get in the garage you make a hard left. I do not lock the wheels as the tires hit fenders if I do. I'm told there is an internal relief valve in the pump. Is this corrrect? Or is the hole in the cap the only relief?

You could either purchase a new P/S cap or try bending the tabs underneath your current cap, to make for a tighter seal.

The cap has a relief hole in the stem, that seems to be where the fluid is coming from. I'm afraid if there is no where to relieve the pressure, I might blow a hose. I'm just not sure why there is so much pressure only turning into the driveway and not any other time. The cap is tight against the reservor. Thanks

Alrighty then!.....Most likely the reservor is overfilled!....Lower the level of P/S fluid in the pump!

Hey Ron, The level of fluid is fine until I pull into the driveway. After that the level goes down due to what I consider excessive pressure which causes some fluid to esscape in turn leaving the fluid level too low to function properly. My problem is trying to stop the fluid from leaking out. I can't seem to understand why it only happens at this time. Thanks, Norm

Where exactly is the "hot" level at in the pump?....Does the pump make any noise when you believe the level drops?.....I believe excessive pressure would cause the fluid to foam, does it look foamy?.....And besides, if it was excessive pressure then a hose would have blown by now?....This is a weird one for sure!....Perhaps a bad P/S pump!

I had this problem and thinking the pump was bad replaced the pump. Problem continued and replaced the reservor. Still leaking, replaced hoses. Still leaking, had pump taken apart and replaced seals. Like I said the level of fluid is fine and for some strange reason, fluid is discharged and the only place it can be coming from is the relief tube in the cap. The cap must have this hole for a reason, and I presume it's for pressure relief, am I wrong?
