View Full Version : Re-starting Motor (Car)
Ramrodd 69 Jan 21st, 09, 02:28 PM My car has been sitting for 4 months. Will I hurt motor starting it up or I
was told to remove distributor and use a (?) to rotate oil through motor
before start up since it was sitting for a while. Thanks!
windycity1 Jan 21st, 09, 02:35 PM Thats a good idea it will lube the valve train.
john68 Jan 21st, 09, 02:39 PM You can pull plugs, and coil wire, spin it over, until you get oil pressure, this way there
is little stress on the engine.
ace's68 Jan 21st, 09, 02:44 PM Unless it's been sitting outside, the oil is like honey, and it's been very cold I vote just turn it over a few times with every thing connected, pump the pedal a few times bring the rpm's up and go for a drive.
People do this all of the time.
I wouldn't pull the dizzy and re prime the lifters, they are already primed.
The likelyness of installing the dizzy back in with no problems is unlikely.
Ramrodd 69 Jan 21st, 09, 02:52 PM Can I remove wires from plugs or plugs need removed
Ramrodd 69 Jan 21st, 09, 02:56 PM I should have mentioned that I installed a new cam and lifters so they are not
lubed. Also, it has been in a garage (cold) and weather has been in the 20-30's
for the past 2 months.
ace's68 Jan 21st, 09, 02:57 PM If you have a mech. fuel pump & carb I wouldn't remove anything.
I live in austin texas, eventhough it wasn't too cold by most peoples standards (40*)
It took atleast a 1 or 2 minutes of cranking to get fuel into the bowls of the carb and finally start and the first 10 seconds of cranking my oil psi shoots up anyways.
I have no choke and nothing to support cold starts, aluminum heads and so on and so on...
Wait, now that I read it, you installed a new cam? Never been ran?
Yes, you should remove the dizzy and do the drill trick for 10 min or so.
I did this once and the other new cam install we just started it and broke it in a 2,200rpm for 15 min or so.
Lifters look beautiful. Your choice...
tgifford5 Jan 21st, 09, 03:05 PM I agree with john 68. Pull the plugs and the coil wire. The engine will spin freely without firing. What does the manufacturer say about breakin for the cam as not to void warranty?
Ramrodd 69 Jan 21st, 09, 03:06 PM Here's the scoop, I wrote this wrong. What I'm doing first is replacing fuel system
and it has a electric fuel pump. I want to start motor and get system going before
installing new cam and lifters so can I "start up" as I said originally with car sitting
4 months in cold garage with 20-30 degree weather. I will prime new cam and lifters
before starting but am I OK now with basically sitting for this amount of time. Sorry for the confusion. Bob
TJS69 Jan 21st, 09, 03:16 PM You are worrying too much over it. 4 months isn't very long. Anyone that lives in the north, lets theirs sit for six months every year ! Just start it.
deerhunter Jan 22nd, 09, 08:31 AM I have a couple of cars that set for longer than that and I always just fire them up and go. If the cam has already been broken in you have nothing to worry about. There will be a film of oil on everything anyhow.

truely.
there is no problem starting it, and there is really no difference between letting it sit for a week compared to 4 months, all of the oil will still drain back
