I recently purchased a T/A rear end cover for my 10 bolt. How do I set initial preload. Also how do I know when to make the proper adjustments. Thanks for the help

Didn't your cover come with instructons? I have the same cover and I think it had detailed instructions. If you don't have them I will check to see if I can find mine. I think you just want slight pressure on the caps, if you preload them to much you will distort the caps.

I'm pretty sure that you torque the cover bolts to 25 FOOT pounds and torque the preload bolts to 10 INCH pounds, then tighten the jam nuts. Put some thread selaer or RTV sealant on the nuts because oil will seap out around the threads if you don't.

Big gear head is right about putting sealer on the pre-load bolts. I had to back mine off and put some sealer on them because they leaked. The pre-load bolts torque to 5 ft/lbs. Here's a site that may be of some interest to you: http://www.lpwracing.com/home.htm

I'm gonna sound stupid (as usual) but what are you guys talkin about? I just had a 75 Nova rear end set up and I got it back with the cover off so I could inspect it. All I thought I had to do was get a gasket, put the cover on and tighten the 10 bolts down. Am I missing something?

Check out the lpw website. It's a cover that is supposed to strengthen the bearing caps in the rear end. They're not cheap but they look great, and may help the rear end last longer.

I looked at that, but my question is for my stock cover is all I have to do is put it on?

Yes, all you have to do is put your cover on with something to seal it and tighten the bolts. I recommend getting a ceramic magnet and using epoxy to attach it to the lower part of the cover to catch small metal particles floating in the oil. Keep it out of the way of the ring gear.
