View Full Version : Holley Mechanical Fuel Pump 170 gph.
Skeeter55 Jan 22nd, 09, 08:26 PM Anybody have any experience with this fuel pump. I'm thinking on running it with my 498 BBC, shooten to hit 600+ HP after dyno in the next 2-weeks... I do have to admit i already screwed up by running new 3/8 line and now i need to run 1/2 line to the pump.,, I kinda want to stay away from electric fuel pump if possible.

HarleyD67 Jan 22nd, 09, 09:37 PM Good pump and yes the line is fine.
I have the older version (cast body not billet)of that pump on my 427sb, and I have have that same fuel line on my car for 5 or 6 yrs now passes tech and no issues with kinks or stress.

Skeeter55 Jan 22nd, 09, 09:59 PM Nice job Harley... How did you bend the aluminum without kinking it and what did you run at the start and finish of the line (did you make a flange)
HarleyD67 Jan 22nd, 09, 10:40 PM Thanks I just used a basic spring type bender, and I took my double flare tool and made a bubble or lip on the end . I didn't run it all the way down just the first flare insert to bulge the end out a little to keep the hose from pulling off.
dawg Jan 23rd, 09, 01:16 AM I had a 120GPM edelbrock which I had fitment issues and went to the comparible Holley and it works great. but keep an eye on pressure at high rpm conditions.
i noticed mine dropped pressure considerably on my 406

Skeeter55 Jan 23rd, 09, 07:51 AM Looking good guys anyone els would like to show off there cool fuel pumps and plumbing..
CS3 Auto Jan 23rd, 09, 08:28 AM When you ready to order, shoot me a pm. I can see what I can do with pricing for you.
Lurchhammer Jan 23rd, 09, 02:28 PM I plan on running that Holley billet pump on my 496 also. I'm going with 1/2" line and that new 1/2" tank sender available now. I just need a filter with at least 170gph now (not sure if it should go on the suction side, or pressure side, or maybe both?).
Please let us know how it works! I bet it will work great since these motors will never have to go past 6000 rpm's and still make 600 ft/lbs of torque easily.

Ill pass for now only because im having some help on the entire plumbing and need to talk to Patrick from Pro-Systems to make sure that pump will keep up with 1000HP @ 900CFM-950CFM. The more info i get the more i need to run the 1/2 from the tank the pump, so i have to wait to see what we come up with... Thank you for the PM and if by Monday i can get my mine set for sure on the Holley Billet 170 GPH i will PM you ... Thanks Again.

Did you have 1/2" line all the way to the carb? The Carter pump required a regulator correct? Seems like something else in your system would have been the limiting factor rather than that pump, because I've seen plenty of 9.90 cars running Holley blue pumps with the old Fram cannister filters which both only flow 110 gph and have restrictive fitting holes. The unregulated billet Holley 170 gph pump should be plenty for 600 HP.

Yes 1/2 all the way to the tank maybe I had a bad one it would suck the bowls dry in 3rd hp is about 650 guessing.
Skeeter55 Jan 24th, 09, 06:03 PM Well now i guess im going to have to rip my new 3/8 line out and run 1/2 from the tank to the pump and a good filter.

Just use the 3/8" as a return line.;)
Skeeter55 Jan 25th, 09, 08:46 AM Just use the 3/8" as a return line.;)Thats a great ideal, but my tank doesn't have a return it only has one line. But in the near future i guess it would and could be used as a return line if i modify the tank... Thanks:yes:very smart info .
Skeeter55 Jan 25th, 09, 09:28 AM Just use the 3/8" as a return line.;)I realy like your thinking and that made me want to just leave it for a future return line, does anybody have any pictures of this Holley 170 gph pump with a return line our it dosent need one.
BigRed-L72 Jan 25th, 09, 09:45 AM Why be borderline ? For that kind of $$$ you can be on the positive side and not have to wonder.
Really check the Clay Smith pump. All mods done in house. Offshore Big Block guy`s seem to like them. If they are good enough for them you`ll be more than covered!!!

Most mechanical pumps, including that one, won't need one. Return lines are mainly for pressure regulators, high pressure pumps made for fuel injection, and super-high flow electrical pumps.

I guess i will leave the 3/8 installed just encase down the road i need to go with electric.
Skeeter55 Jan 29th, 09, 04:10 PM Today came my Holley Billet 170 GPH Mechanical fuel pump and i hope it works as well as it looks... Also im getting reed of the 3/8 and installing Pre-Bent 1/2 fuel line from the tank to the pump... The best part is when the motor is finish being built and they are ready to dyno it, they will use my carb, dizzy and fuel pump just to make sure it doesn't lean out. You guys will get the update on the fuel pump when it gets dyno.http://www.holley.com/data/products/pictures/large12-454-25.jpg

Skeeter55 Jan 29th, 09, 05:06 PM Right on Skip.....she is gonna be a monster!Ron right back at you:thumbsup:... Its a matter of days maybe 2 more weeks:yes:. They been waiting on the heads and Brodix Race Rites (must have done a bit of work to them) just released them on Tuesday.
Lurchhammer Jan 29th, 09, 09:06 PM Sound good. Are you going to use a 1/2" sender in the tank, or do you have a fuel cell? I'm just wondering how you're going to attatch the sender to the hard line because I have the same problem. They have the option of attatching a #10 or 8 AN fitting to the sender, but then I'll have to modify the 1/2" stainless hard line to an AN fitting also.
Maybe a fuel filter will fit in that space also? What kind of filter did you decide on?

Maybe a fuel filter will fit in that space also? What kind of filter did you decide on?I haven't gotten that far yet, I'm hopping that i can temporally tap right into the 3/8 sending on the tank or just run a 3/8 hose from the tank to the 1/2 and force it on there for now... I know it defeats the purpose but right now i have no choise... If i run into some $$$ ill get the complete bad boy tank from Ricks $700.00+ but it looks awesome. So for now im going to cheat but 1/2 to the pump and #10 to a filter and #8 all the way to the carb.
Skeeter55 Jan 29th, 09, 09:36 PM This is where i need a little help and i keep looking at pictures from old post just to try and get ideas...
BigRed-L72 Jan 30th, 09, 06:18 AM What we did was leave the factory sending unit in place. Then we drilled a hole next to it for the 1/2" line.
Made the bends needed to get the 1/2" line where we wanted it in the tank.
Used silicone to seal it all up nice, let it sit over night and put the tank back up. Works perfect.
