View Full Version : RARE ONE of ONE 1967 CAMARO L-78
coporic Jan 23rd, 09, 02:24 PM Ok, i have never heard of this car before, but I saw it in person today. Its called a
1967 Camaro CHEROKEE SS-RS Conv.., it was an GM design car i guess. The car has original paint , looks like corvette bronze or madeira maroon with an L-78 396-375hp engine and Fuel injection. Also, it has an Automatic transmission.
Some of the wilder features were - Split Bumpers front and rear , short molded-in rear spoiler , hood says - Mark IV 396 with a clear bubble over the fuel injection. It also has a viper type fuel filler in the rear and a hood tach.
Deluxe black interior , gauges , RS package and dual exhaust with Corvette type square tips.
They had it roped off so i could not get anymore detail , but this is a GM Built car , not some aftermarket custom.
A super neat car and its going on the auction block at the Mecum Auction on Saturday in Florida, but they have no pictures on there web site.
Any idea what it will bring ? ? ? Neat piece of history ! !

coporic Jan 23rd, 09, 02:52 PM Thats the car i saw today at the Mecum Auction , only it doesnt have the corvette knock-off wheels anymore, it has rally wheels. What a cool car.
It has split bumpers - front and rear !
So, whats it worth as its going on the auction block tomorrow ? ? ? I would guess the owner would have run it at Barrett Jackson Auction for more money but with No-RESERVE i would not take that chance either. Although i would have guessed Ron Pratt would have given half a million for it ?

78MBA Jan 23rd, 09, 04:32 PM I have the November '07 issue of muscle car review that talks in depth about this car and it's elustrious history. Car came equipped with a non-VIN-assigned, 67 L78 four-bolt main block with experimental Weber downdraft carbs on a moon intake manifold, TH 400 trans, 12 bolt posi, J52 disc brakes, Koni front shocks, AC Delco rear shocks, power steering with a custom Corvette wheel, 15x6-inch Corvette Turbine wheels, hand formed fiberglass hood with mounted tachometer, clear plastic scoop with "Mark IV 396", custom rear deck spoiler, split rear bumpers cast in brass, candy-apple red paint applied over Aztec Gold basecoat, gold pinstripe, power windows, power top, bullet side mirrors, custom console with special guages, AC Delco AM/FM radio, and fold down rear seat and custom interior. One of the rarest if not the rarest Camaro in history!
yellow69RS Jan 24th, 09, 12:02 PM Mecum has sold some pretty pricey cars up here in St Charles IL. I try to get to their auctions at least one day that they are here. I'll stick my neck out and say .............
it won't meet reserve.

coporic Jan 25th, 09, 10:13 AM Car did not sell., and was Dana Mecum's show piece for the weekend. They are selling the Cherokee Camaro at Dana Mecum's Original Spring Classic - May 13 / 14 th in Indiana.
So if someone out there has to have this car you still have time.

dbackse350 Jan 25th, 09, 01:17 PM The Cherokee was only on display at Kissimee. Car will be on the block at Indy. I detailed the car before it left. I wish I could share more. Suffice it to say, the car and its history is more and then some. Look for the book that is being written about it.
William Jan 25th, 09, 02:34 PM The Cherokee spent many years in Milwaukee, having been originally owned by Augie Pabst. I saw him at the vintage races at Road America last July and he did acknowledge having owned it. He said they could never get it to run well with the Weber carbs and he soon tired of it. Back in the '80s I saw it at a local trim shop. With the issue of Hot Rod with me there were obvious detail differences between it and the magazine car so there was more than one.
coporic Jan 25th, 09, 08:04 PM The car on display had lots of dents and dings along the body line on the doors and one real bad dent on the top of the passenger fender. Paint looked original as it was CHECKED very badly and would need to be stripped to do anything with it, however , they are only
ORIGINAL once !
The car was missing the correct Corvette Wheels from what i could tell.
A very cool piece of history , and i would bet whoever owns it puts a very high value on it. But the world will find out the current market value when it runs in the spring.
Hopefully someone like Jerry Macneish is doing to book to confirm all the styling changes made to the car.

Some of those pics look familiar!:D;)
JOE58 Aug 8th, 09, 05:45 AM The Cherokee would be a great car for the GM Heritage Center in Detroit.
Due to the present financial condition of GM, they probably won't be bidding.

Alabamcam Aug 9th, 09, 10:25 AM I have never seen these Camaro's in person but I would love to check them out.
erik67ssrs Aug 9th, 09, 08:30 PM There's an article about this car in this month's Camaro Performers magazine, page 86.
Joe Harrison Aug 10th, 09, 03:33 AM It's an amazing camaro and it's styling for the day really shows. I like it but there are a few things that are just plain ugly to me. Those split bumpers in front, the molded spoiler going to the 1/4 in the rear. They just don't do it for me personally. I am glad they never made it to production. I like fuel filler.....it's very cool. Been thinking of doing one of those myself at some point.
