View Full Version : Temec 5 speed or auto?
yzf560 May 27th, 03, 01:50 PM Im having a 69 camaro built for me with a 427 either dual quads or a pro charger.I was going to run the tremec 5 speed but now I am considering a th400.What do you guys like?It will be street driven but i would love to do a few passes with it.Does anyone know what i could gain et wise with an auto in the 1/4 mile? thanks
Toad May 27th, 03, 02:01 PM The main thing you would gain with the TH400 at the track would be consistency. Manual trans cars usually have a higher trap speed than auto trans cars, but an auto is easier to launch and shift. If you're not concerned with consistency and its a weekend street cruizer then IMO the 5 speed would be more fun to drive. Plus you would get an overdrive for the highway. :D
Either way you go, make sure the tranny/stall/clutch is built to handle the engine, because a procharged 427 will destroy the stock form of either tranny. ;) hope that helps.
89rs400 May 27th, 03, 02:10 PM what rear-end gear ratio are we talking?
IMO Less than 3.73 go with the 5speed. More than 3.73 go with the auto (if it will ever see highway time go with the 5speed regardless).
yzf560 May 27th, 03, 02:26 PM Im thinking of a 3.55 or so with the tremec.4.10 with the auto. The tremec with anything lower than 3.55 seems like 1st gear would be useless
1FASTZ May 27th, 03, 03:57 PM I'd go with the Tremec and 3.55, that way you have the best of both worlds. Since you have a big block, you might want to wait on the Tremec that's supposed to be coming out with a 2.97 1st gear ratio. Just some food for thought.
BigRed-L72 May 27th, 03, 04:49 PM While the Tremic would be fun to drive, I`d be wary of the durability of it behind a well built Big Block.
I don`t think the manual trans would win out over the right TH400 combo though at the track
AllGoNoShow May 28th, 03, 05:01 AM I don't think durability should be an issue...I've heard and saw more then a couple guys with stock Tremecs and slicks with 11 second passes and even 10 second passes...pick up a Mustang 5.0 magazine(I swear I was just looking at a friends), you'll see a lot of people running a tremec behind 10 sec. motors. There is even a mustang that is running the Tremec into the 8s with some mods to the tranny(I think he removed 5th gear for the reciprocating wieght and made a support braket so the case wouldn't shift).
Balboni May 28th, 03, 06:21 AM I have a Tremac TKO and I am very happy with it. I have a 3.73 rear end. I wish it was lower. You may even consider going lower that a 355. The input shaft on the Forte Tremak is faily beefy. When you bring your car up on the highway and you are sick of the noise and the high RPMs 5th gear makes it really nice. Even nicer if you want to talk to you passenger. It would be a much nicer tranny if it was a 6spd. The gear transition between 4th and 5th is too dramatic for me personal taste.

89rs400 May 28th, 03, 10:23 AM well,, theres a tremec for just about everyone now.. with the 2.97 first and the series II that has the .80 overdrive. You can go with anything from big rearend to mild and still be pretty much tailored to any combination.
There was a mullet brothers PHR tv or something that had a 650hp chevelle with a tremec and it was shown buring 3rd gear at about 50+mph..Id say they will take just about anything you can throw at them. If you really don't have a need for the Od then just find a SuperT10 or something easier to install. Most the time, when you talk a big rearend gear (especially with a lot of HP), its accompanied with a tall tire (28+" ) that usually kills about 10percent of the gear. 3.73 to 1 with 28" tire is about 22.3mph per 1000 rpm and thats not too bad.. as long as you don't see the highway.
yzf560 May 28th, 03, 02:14 PM Thanks guys.Im also considering doing a built 200r4 Ive heard these can be built very well. All in all ill probably go with the tremec.
Novaguy73 May 28th, 03, 03:36 PM Id go richmond 5 or 6 speed personally. A good friend had a tremec and never liked it at all. Then he got his richmond and loved it. Also that tremec may have duribility issues behind alot of torque, i think theyre only rated at 400 ft/lbs but either way id go with a 5 speed unless this is a strip only car.
x77matt May 28th, 03, 06:07 PM TRemec!! I have one in my Z with 4.10 gears and love it. the 3550 is rated at 425 ft. lbs and the TKO at 525. I am now putting one in my big block corvette (L72). I have heard Mr. Forte himself runs an 11 sec 383 with a stock 3550 for a while now with no problems, and the TKO is even stronger... Unless you are tubbed with a wicked grippy clutch, you will probably spin the tires or burn up the clutch before you hurt that tremec. That trans with 3.55 gears would be a terror off the line AND on the highway!
Good luck either way! graemlins/beers.gif

69ProTouring May 28th, 03, 06:15 PM I have the TKO and love it. I'm not worried in the least about the tranny. Like Matt said, there are other things that will go before the TKO does. I have 3.73's and an aluminum flywheel, and it's an absolute blast to drive.
Mean 69 May 29th, 03, 08:40 AM Tremec TKO, 3.73 gears. I drive mine to and from work, 50 miles each way, and the motor turns about 3k RPM at around 85-90 MPH. Manual trans cars are way more fun to drive.
You'll be happy, trust me.

I like the Tremec. Got one in my car.
LukeSkywalker May 30th, 03, 09:47 AM I just got my Tremec TKO for my 67. I bought a whole kit that included everything but the clutch. Nothing beats rowing through the gears IMO.
:D
DonCasanova May 30th, 03, 06:22 PM Switched from Super T-10/4.10 to Tremec TKO-II/3.73, behind my 468 and would definitely give it the thumbs up. Much more fun!...........DC
Matt Leuck May 30th, 03, 07:05 PM Tremec!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
<-- Tremec 3550 behind a 383, and 3.90's in the rear. I just got it all together, so ive pout less than 100 miles on it, and am still breaking in the new tranny and rear, but i can tell you IT'S A BLAST! :D
I had a 200-4R before this Tremec, and i would NOT go back, unless i were going to do nothing but strip racing.
You wont regret going with the 5spd.
