It would make you cry if I told you. I bought all of my stuff in the early 90s'.

I have less than a grand in both quarters, fenders and hood.

Quarters were NOS and front clip was newer GM stuff off from a drag car because the guy went fiberglass.

20K doesn't go real far. It really depends on what you want. If you want the "latest and greatest" it wouldn't be hard to double that and then some. It's not cheap to build a "nice" pro-touring car and it's almost impossible to build a "top notch" pro-touring car. Then what ever you think the budget is add at least 25% or so on top of that. It's kind of like a government project.

Where is the OP? The way I read the question was for basic things, i.e. carbed motor, basic trans. body parts, some suspension upgrades and maybe wheels. If you are looking to go all out with maybe a new sub-frame, LSx motor, maybe DSE suspension, mini tub etc...then 20K will not even come close.

I am over 30k on the blown car. I bought it bone stock when I was 22, now i'm 24 and everything mechanical on the car has been changed. It was a 6 banger auto with a all original body car.

I'd say close to 20k - I dont want to count it, thats the depressing side of it. Why do you ask are you feeling guilty? or just trying to justify that your not the only one with a car addiction? :D

Well,
Lets see, bought the car for 17K. Dynacorn car btw. Came with all sheetmetal installed, 396, Muncie, 12 bolt and interior. That was in Jan.09.
Since then, dropped 7K for an LS2 & T56 complete. And hell I don't know, another 6K at least on every little BS part you can think of and I'm just getting started. So, that's 30K so far. With another 20K, I might be close to finished.........Yeh Right.

I'm at 35k and still have a way to go! But again, every part is new plus I made this car a RS which is an expensive conversion. I wanted the car to look pretty much original and drive like a new Vette. Parts aren't cheap. And of course you run into the avalanche theory...I spent too much on the motor which puts out over 600 hp so now I have to get a transmission, drivetrain, and rearend that can handle the power. Then you think, wow, now it needs to stop so you end up buying expensive brakes. Then you think, new cars handle way better than this originally did so let's go with a suspension that can hang with cars in the price range I just spent all this money. And on and on it rolls lol.

Its hard to come across a decent car to begin with, got my starter for 11k. Was supposed to be 25k total project, but I'll probably have between 50 and 60k invested.

15K but I just bought the thing...now the fun AND cash outta the wallet begins and after reading some of the other posts, I'm terrified as the what the end figure will be. I will resolve to just not count the $$$.

I haven't tallied recent parts orders....but I'm well north of $70k on my 69.

Probably 65-70K in my '67. I have a spreadsheet that I used to track the cost and I'm around 100K total but that includes some tools (3K), paint/bodywork/dipping (12K), initial cost of car (13K) and shipping (4-5k)... so the remaining is approx cost of parts.

You really can't base your projects hard cost on the numbers your getting here. You need to compare your expected projects total costs against everyone else who posted here. That will make all the difference in the world.

The difference in buying a LS7 vs LS2 is around $8,000 (crate engine), not including all the dry sump oil plumbing, and canisters required to make it run.

You can buy a complete ignition system with wiring harness from an aftermarket company for about $1200 or buy a stock system and re-pin everything yourself with an aftermarket kit for about half the cost.
Or you can buy top of the line FAST or Big Stuff 3 ignition systems.
FAST Ignition: $2194.00
XIM: $ 795.00
Misc. plugs $ 300.00
Fuel Injectors $ 600.00
Total $ 3,800 (less tax)

The cost above doesn't include a new wiring harness for the cars main electrical system. You can buy a setup from American Autowire for around 400 bucks. I went with the new ISIS system which is about triple that.

A do it yourself exhaust system with headers can run $600 - $800, A full blown custom setup with ATS headers can run upwards of $7K

Keep your head up and don't be discouraged. I've been working on my car for 2-1/2 years now and my bank is about $120K lighter. I'm another $40k (including paint) and 8 months away from completing my project.

You can build a great car, a fast car, for a 3rd of what i spent.

What happened to don't ask don't tell? Lol

I know I have right around $12k into my 77 and it is pretty run of the mill. But that includes bolts, rattle cans, registration, everything-no one budgets or remembers the $15 trips to the parts/hardware stores, but I do. And that includes the car too, which required $0 body to date. I figure $3-5k more to get it where I want it for this 'phase'-power tour ready

I figure a budget of $30k for the 67 not including the car since I bought it years ago. So that means $40k I suppose.

:)

I'm learning the $100 - $150 items you never think of add up faster than imaginable.

My project started the day I decided to add disc brakes and rims. :noway:

I bought my car running, driving with nice paint for 12.5k. Then I pulled EVERYTHING apart and redid it my way, including 10k in new parts. That was say...five years ago? Since that that little bugger has nickle and dime'd me to death, LOL. I have no idea what I've spent on it since it was "done"...

This was what it looked like when I brought it home...of course that wasn't good enough for me, LOL:

That's a tough one. My problem is I keep changing stuff. As it sits, probably around $20k including purchase price in 87. But I've had several motors and transmissions........and other stuff.

My 67 has been going for 7 years now. It started out was going to replace the front seal on the transmission after it leaked oil all over everything. That turned into a full out rotisserie restoration. Geez! over a $5 seal. Things I get myself into. I have around $20,000 in it not counting the car. I only paid $2000 for it back in 01. I stole it! I`ll get it finished one of these days. Probably after I spend another $20,000.

Great looking project Tony!

Everyone has to start somewhere and it looks like your doing it right. Lots of information here and on the pro-touring sites for help.

I feel the worst thing you can do is keep track of your costs. If you know what you spent you will get sick.

You'll never get what you put in it back when you sell it.

I remember somebody asking what does it take get $100,000 when you sell your car........... and the answer is to have $150,000 into it!

How true is that!

Keep on telling yourself it's a hobby.

$40-45k for full frame off resto-mod
827hp 565, wilwood 13" brakes with hydroboost, tubular control arms, 4 link, 9 inch
Paint/bodywork, full new interior, custom wheels/tires, stainless steel/ceramic exhaust, new glass/chrome everything
But man is it looking good...

And remember, the old cars are appreciating while new iron drops like a rock.
They certainly aren't making any more first gen camaros. (oh wait - dynacorn is...)
:)
good luck!
