View Full Version : Rubber Washer on Spindle
67CamNKC Jan 29th, 09, 04:25 PM I stripped my spindles and noticed there was a rubber disc against the shoulder of the spindle on a drum brake setup. I am changing to discs and just noticed this washer. The parts house didn't have a listing for the washer. They seem to be OK. It would go against or near the wheel seal.
Should these be replaced or are they needed?
Denvervet Jan 29th, 09, 04:56 PM Shouldn't be a washer there..likely remnant of the inner grease seal.

Harleyguy Jan 29th, 09, 05:37 PM My 67 has what seems like a leather washer on both spindles, I do beleive it is original as it was never apart before.

Shannon, try this link ,backing plate seal.I was curious if they are needed on disc brake conversion.
NHBandit Jan 29th, 09, 06:28 PM I have seen them on several disc brake cars that had never been apart. They do belong there although I doubt it would cause any problem at all if you left them out.
pdq67 Jan 29th, 09, 09:07 PM You can use a washer cut from a writing tablet's cardboard backing if you are talking about the gasket between the dust shield for disc's or the drum backing plate and spindle fine.
Lightly oil/grease it up and go.

67CamNKC Jan 31st, 09, 10:05 AM Thanks guys. It does seem to be leather like instead of rubber.
Lobstah Jan 31st, 09, 12:51 PM My 69 has front discs, and had leather washers like the ones in the Rick's link.

davidpozzi Jan 31st, 09, 07:27 PM It's a cork gasket, may look different if soaked in brake fluid or grease. If you run dust shields on your disc brakes, it will prevent rattling. A little silicone seal will do it too.

Lobstah Feb 1st, 09, 04:17 AM Dave,
I guess 40yrs of grease could make cork look like leather! :)
