I was thinkin about a 4.10 posi, but ive heard from a few that you will harldly able to be able to take it on the street. So they've told me to go with a 3.73. I want to have as much jump off the line as i can get...will only be driving on some weekends. any help?

i hardly ever use anything but the 3.73's. you can go faster than the 4.10's. a smaller gear ratio will help you jump off of the line quicker.

Street Car or Race car?
My choice personally would be 3.55's, you have a 3 speed and a stroker.

Hardly be able to drive it on the street? Doubtful... there's MANY cars that run 4.11's everyday. If you're only driving it on the weekends, go with the 4.11's! You'll be glad you did. They're a little tall for everyday driving as far as fuel economy goes, and I wouldn't want to cruise them at 70mph on the expressway without an overdrive transmission, but for what you want to do... go for it.

I see from your signature that it say's 4.11's already. With that engine combo and those gears, you'll need some sticky tires!

You will be dissapointed if you don't use the 4.11's. If it's a weekend toy, I would assume gas mileage isn't of the essence. The car will be MUCH more responsive with the steeper gears.

Buy the 3 series Eaton posi and the thick 4.10 gear so you can change it to a 3.42 or 3.73 later if you don't like the 4.10.

Like anything else, your choice of gear is up to you and how you plan on driving the car. My '67 had 5.43's in it and I drove it on the street with no problems, but the 433 had a big convertor and rev'ed to 8000. I am down to 4.88's now, still no problems, but I still have a "big" convertor (3400). All things being equal, I will probably end up with 4.11's or 4.33's.

It all depends on how and where you plan on driving it. I am the first to admit that I will not take it for a long cruise on the interstate, but daily driving and beach cruising is easy. You have to decide what you can or can not live with.

Do not automatically assume that lower is always faster. Believe it or not, it is possible to go slower with lower gears. I changed out my 3.08's for 4.10's and my car runs a full tenth slower from 330' - 1320'. Just like engine parts have to matched to the entire combo, so do gears.

You need to look at your torque and horsepower curves and what your goals for the car are. Match the gears to that.

What tires are you going to run? What good is snap off the line if you can't hook? Traction on the street can be difficult.

Given your cam/head combo, though, I don't think I would run any taller (smaller number) than a 3.73.

Remember the big MOPARS came stock with 3.23's and they did get down the road, what with that great torque-flite tranny they most all ran.

As for me, I really like my 3.31's. I just build grunt motors that go real good about mid track to the top!! A 2000 to 6000rpm power band cam suits me fine with the way I do things...pdq67

If I may add my $.02, 3.73 are the max street gear in my opinion, unless you have overdrive. 3.42-3.55 is optimum for a true street car. Be sure you are true to yourself when you say, it will only be driven on weekends, this could be true. Where you are going to drive it means more than when. If you plan on getting on the highway at all 4.11's are not the way to go. I have 4.10's and there is no way I would run them without my overdrive. How tall of a tire do you plan to run? This makes a big difference too. As mentioned above steep gears and no hook = slow ET I went from 3.42 to 4.10 and actually ran slower due to lack of traction. Driving around town gets old real fast, so plan accordingly.

Hi Atldc,
I would go with 3.42 Or 3.73, I have the basic combo that weighs 3340 with 3.42 with 28" tire (drag radial) open rear. When the S-15 hook it runs high 12'.I had a 350 trans with 1400 convert that went 12.80 @109. Last week I put a 700R4 and went 12.47 @ 108.64 with a 2600 Converter

the place i will be driving it is about 20-25 miles away. so this would probably mean to go w/3.73. with this gear, what tire do you recommend?

If i did go w/the 4.10s, what tire size would you recommend? in my nova, i believe i can only fit max 8" wide tires on the back, could the shocks and the weight transfer make me hook up w/4.10?

Are you only going to drive this car one place? Is it a strip only car? If so then you can put whatever gear in it you want. In order to hook with any size tire you need weight transfer, you must also control the rear end. What I mean by control it is, keep if from wrapping, twisting etc... This is done with traction bars. The only 8" wide tire I think you will stand a chance at hooking will be slicks. Of course this also depends on how much Power you are making. You will definetly want sub frame conectors as well. It is a lot easier to give advice/opinions if we know the goal you are shooting for. Give us a baseline of what the car runs now (if it's running). That way people can make suggestions with some knowledge of what you are trying to accomplish. Your combo sounds real similar to mine. When I was asking what size tire I was talking about how tall the tire was. If you are going to drive on the street with 3.73 or 4.10's I think you will want a tire at least 28" tall maybe even 29 or 30", this will decrease your RPMs at cruise speeds. The taller tire can hurt your short times a little but should MPH better on the big end. Honestly you are leaving way to many variables to give good advice. With 3.42's I ran 11.90 with a very similar combo (on street tires). What gears are in the car now?
