Lately I've noticed that my electric choke seems to be operating very inconsistently. Sometimes it does not come on when it's cold and other times it will not fully release after the engine is warm. Any ideas on what would cause this?

Pull the cap and check inside the choke to see if it's gummed up. Do you have a reliable 12V supply? Is your linkage (choke) dirty or sticky at all? Choke flap rubbing or hanging up on the housing?

Thanks for the feedback dubs - The linkage and plastic cam are all very clean. The carb looks like new but I haven't pulled the cap yet. I bought the carb new about 2 years ago and has worked fine till now. I have verified the 12V source and is constant - comes on with engine starting. However, if I pull the wire the choke plaste doesn't react - I thought it was supposed to??? (maybe I'm wrong). I check'd it out some more at lunch and the main issue seems to be that it does step down from idling high - about 1,400 rpm BUT then gets hung up at about 1,050 RPM and won't come down from there unless I flick the linkage w/my finger - then it goes down to the proper 790 RPM that my idle is set at. The cam looks fine though and the linkage looks fine. I'm thinking about removing the dang thing - plate and all. Any other thoughts. I could also try to adjust it so that it disengages sooner (at colder op. temp.) Possibly this would fix it. Thanks for the help.

Try adjusting the cap so it will come off sooner and if that don't do it then try decreasing the fast idle screw as it may be hanging up on the fast idle cam!

If I remember right there is a small allen ajustment screw on the choke linkage. It's about the 8 oclock position looking straight on.You almost need a flashlight and mirror to see it.I'm not home now so I can"t go out and check it out but I think I used it for kick down ajustment.Hope this helps you.

We have a lucky winner! - You got the prize Badbird (of helping my car run better). I adusted the choke to disengage sooner by turning the cover clockwise a couple more notches. It's been operating properly all weekend. Thanks for everyone's help/ideas.

Damn! Maybe that's what I should have done. Could have saved from installing the last two fuel injection systems.;)
