View Full Version : Square Oil Filters?

Thats what I think I need. I was getting ready for spring, probably too early for some, but here in Texas, the days sure look like it.

I was changing oil and filter for first time since motor was back in car. I looked at my oil filter, snug between the new D 368 headers and my kicked out oil pan. No way this thing is comming out in the round shape it is, unless I loosen headers from motor. So thats what I did. I am using a Napa 1061 filter. I did loosen headers to get it out. I was determined to see what shape the filter needed to be in , so it would come out, without loosening the headers.
With a small ford tool actually a body hammer, I flattened the side about 1'' wide , all the way down, below the oil seal body. Seems this will allow to squeeze thru the header and bell housing .

I did some searches here and some people recommended a PF 25. No luck as its just shorter, I need smaller id. I find a PF 454 which is about half as tall as the Napa filter, same id, but I don't like the thought of running that much less filter media.

So, does anyone have the same set up as I do, sbc, Dougs D368 header and a Champ 7 qt kick out pan ? What oil filter are you using?

Or does someone know of the availability of a square oil filter that will fit a sbc?

No, I will not go to a remote filter.

thanks

I was just going to suggest to run a remote oil filter along with an oil cooler.

I think you are asking for an smaller outer diameter (OD) not ID filter Don, is that correct? I also assume once it's past the header and pan kick out you can then spin it on. The problem is if you look at the block where the filter seals you don't have a lot of room for a smaller OD filter. Have you checked to see if there is a way you can slip the filter between header tubes to get it into place? If not you don't have many options, replace the pan or add a remote filter seems to be it.

I won't suggest a remote filter since you are not open to that thought ;) but, that's the route I went.

Don, I have the same champ pan you do.
When I change mine, I lay it on it's side, so it's sitting on the pan kickout and the header tube, then push it forward, right off the fron of the kickout.
There's just enought room up there, the header turns up and the kickout ends and there's room for it to fall out before it hits the crossmember.

Huh. I run a 454 with a Side Kick Morrosso Pan and Hooker Competition Headers and can't install or remove it from the bottom; but I can slip a tall filter over the top of the collector pipes and drop the base of the filter on top of the side kick then thread it into position. It's messy and I have to cover the collector pipes to protect them from spilling Oil.

I realize remote is not fun but loosening a header to change the oil is worse! I have mine on the passenger side frame snout and it's a piece of cake. You could mount it on the drivers side on a stock sub. ( I didn't want a remote either!)

get a remote filter mount setup off a 4X4 S10 blazer with a 4.3. it will mount a PF52 filter up next to the radiator.
or just get an oil mount adapter for a mid 90's Vette without an oil cooler, which also uses the PF52 filter- but it offsets it toward the oil pan, so it may not clear the pan kickout.
i'm not sure, but i think some 1 ton 4X4 pickups or vans or something used a remote mount fullsize filter- but you know how thinking works sometimes...

Dennis did a better proof reading job than I did , yes , I was referring to outside diameter.

Jim, I am doing just as you said, but I have to flatten the side of the filter can a little , before I can get it thru. I have cut this filter apart and I do have the room, before the side of the can , totally touches the filter media.

Well this will work for me, its a little messy and I only change oil maybe 3 times a year so I am good with this. Thanks guys, guess I will quit looking for this square oil filter.

we'll see how mine goes, changing oil is on my list for the beginning of our season this year, which is (finally can you believe it, gawd what a long and horrid winter!!) now at least within thinking about time.
I did one oil change with this setup, just before the yellowstone run last year, so I'm up to 5k, it's time.

Don..............same issue here with my Champ CP60LT pan and my Hooker Super Comps. I have to loosen the header and disconnect at the collector too. Then turn the filter sideways and slip it out forward between the block and the header. I usually wrap the header with some aluminum foil to keep the oil off it. I am considering a remote mount but for the couple of times I change the oil in a season prolly not worth it.

I have the CV products pan and it's tight but they do come out . I bought the hamburger adapter to go -12 oil lines to a earls cooler and then filter . Jim i'm going to put the polished cooler up be side the other one you like looking at .

I think this is it, but don't remember anybody else being involved w/ them.

Good to hear its not a new problem, it may have been worse if I still had my Lakewood . Like Jim said, for oil changes two times a year, I can live with this.
