View Full Version : Is there that much of a difference
BT1969 Feb 5th, 09, 05:40 AM Hi, I am in the earlier stages of a frame off resto. for my 69 BB convt.
My subframe has been sandblasted & is going out to be painted tomorrow.
I have had the control arms sandblasted & they will be painted as well..
The car has disks on the front, original power steering & I hope to be putting it back together by this time next week......
With that said, I have seen numerous ads on e-bay for rack & pinion setups as well as tubular a-arm setups....
Do one or the other or both together make "that much of a difference" in the handleing of the car.
Thanks, as always for any suggestions........

TJS69 Feb 5th, 09, 09:59 AM Someone will say that you have to have them. I don't feel either is needed. If you do the guldstrand mod. to your subframe to gain more camber you should be fine. The mod is free, just your own labor. Some of the rack and pinion kits can cause you problems. I would suggest to either buy an AGR steering box or get an IROC 3rd generation steering box. See the 3rd gen. steering "sticky" at the head of this section.
David Pozzi has Gulstrand mod. information on his website.

I would re-build every thing and leave it 100% original.

If it's an original car, I would, too.
novaderrik Feb 6th, 09, 02:48 AM at least do the Guldstrand mod before getting the frame painted up all pretty. it makes the geometry of the front suspension work better with modern tires, and if it is done properly 99% of even the smartest know-it-alls won't be able to tell you did it.
BPOS Feb 6th, 09, 01:53 PM The term "handling" could be interpreted many different ways. Neither rack and pinion steering nor tubular a-arms will make your car "corner" any better than it does without them, either in combo or by themselves. You might get some + caster with the upper a-arm so it tracks a bit better, but you haven't addressed the camber issue.
pdq67 Feb 6th, 09, 06:59 PM I couldn't do the G/M to my car so went w/ Pro-Motorsports spindle extenders and MOOG offset upper A-arm shafts.
I really want a set of upper arms like JimM has that are 100 percent adjustable turn-buckled.
My now BB car has to stock, clock-cut, then one coil cut off the bottom MOOG 5536's and the 1-15/16" tall spindle extenders and it has never sat lower in front and still has fine ground clearance by me!
I figure the 5536's are right at 500 to maybe 525 pounds vs stock at 488!
I was shooting for my lower A-arms being almost parallel w/ the ground and am almost there.

why couldn't you do the G Mod? don't own a power drill and accompanying bit?
pdq67 Feb 7th, 09, 02:19 PM Once it's done, your car isn't STOCK, that's why!!!
It's just me is all......

Eric Kammerer Feb 7th, 09, 04:25 PM I'd agree with the SC&C upper arms vs. Guldstrand mod. I may pull my stock UCAs and use the SC&C pieces if I have to monkey with the coils again.
j_Blanton34 Feb 8th, 09, 05:22 PM You better watch those e-bay tubular control arm deals because those control arms can be very dangerous. I've seen sets SNAP bolts from the pressure just backing out of the driveway after installation.. Two different brands of control armsto. DO your research.

Do you mean they snapped the small inserts?...or actually snapped one of the two bolts that attache the UCA to the subframe?
I've heard of the inserts breaking, as there was a problem with the very early sets, but I've not read about any bolts breaking. Is that in a thread somewhere?
