View Full Version : Brake Booster removal Question

I have all the brake lines disconnected, the Master cylinder has been removed and the 4 nuts holding the booster to the fire wall have been removed. The booster is loose but when I try to move it out more than a few inches it seems to be caught on the rod which passes thru the firewall and hooks to the brake pedal.
My question is, will the rod pull out of the back of the booster or do I have to undo something from the brake pedal assembly. If I do, hows does it come apart?

Thanks

You'll need to crawl underneath the dash and remove the clevis pin from the brake pedal arm, this pin secures the brake booster linkage to the brake pedal.

Yep. The rod is supposed to come out with the booster. On manual brake setups it stays attatched to the pedal but not on power brakes.

I have changed boosters before without removing the master cylinder and undoing the brake lines, I hate Brake Fluid! and bleeding brakes if not necessary.
Just undo all the bolts/clevis etc., and carefully pull the master forward, the lines will flex enough to get the booster out. You have to hold your mouth rite but it does come out. LOL.

Thank you,

I got that pesky pin out of there as you said and the booster and rod pulled right out.:hurray:
I am replacing the M/C, booster, and valve. It's just about the last thing to do to complete the referbishing of the engine compartment.
A new dash pad and new insturment panel bezel and the interior will be done.
The 302ci is back from the machine shop, the 4-speed trans and 12 bolt are also finished and waiting installation. If I am lucky I should have the car ready for a test drive by the time spring gets here.

thanks again for all your help.

You're Welcome!....And just take your time installing that pin, it was starting to piss me off, something was in my way, I can't remember if it was a bracket or the clutch pedal arm!

When you put the booster back on, it helps to have someone under the dash to make sure the rod lines up with the brake pedal arm. If it is off to the side you will need to loosen the booster to get it where it belongs. You don't need to ask me how I know this.
