well as some of you know im building a 383 and i just got done clearancing the whole block.(all nessasary boring has been done) i have paid special attention to everthing that i have clearnanced and i think im ready for the rest. tonight i got done grinding and washed it all very well. after that i blew out all the holes and oiled the machined surfaces. tommorrow im planing on plastigaging it. after that its a trip to the speed shop for my baby to be balanced. so is there anything that i have forgotten so far, or anything that i should think of for the future?
thanx for the help

Could you also send me the list as well, I'm thinking about building one too. I've helped a guy build a 350, but this 383 thing seems to have some additional tricks to it that I would like to know about.

well its long but here you go im sure i might have missed somthing but someone else will catch it, or add, eric_68 knows alot more than me. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif first off i started with a 4 bolt main, now you can use a 2 bolt but i had just spun a bearing in my 350 4 bolt so i decided to use it. next i wanted a 383 stroker kit so i didnt have to find everything indivually. i went with powerhouse i have heard only good things about them and they are not expensive as others. i thought about going with speedomotive for awhile but then i heard a few things about them that i didnt like, so thats where i sit for a kit. in the kit I got a brand new crank, new cr3 rods, moly rings, arp bolts for the rods (5.7), all new bearings and gaskets, also i could have gotten pistons with it to which would of cost me a grand total of $525 (thats with shipping i believe) with the pistons, but i wanted different pistons and knew i could get them cheaper at swap meet so thats what i did. if you use the 5.7 rods you need to buy special pistons. i think that covers the bottom end for parts, next i had the machine work done, boring, honed, decked and new cam bearings and freez plugs, hot tanked, also had pins pressed on the new 383 domed hyper. pistons. i got all this done for about $200. after that i took the block home and started grinding. you will have to set the bearings in and the crank assembly, what i did was took each piston with bearings on the rod and hooked them to the crank one at a time.you need to put the cam in and timing chain on at this point to check for cam to rod clearnance. so i put #1 piston on and spun it around 2 times so the engine makes full rotation for cam clearance to see where i needed to grind and then marked it with a yellow grez pencil. after that i took that piston out and went to #3 cyd. Etc.Etc. after that was all done i took the crank out and then started to grind on all the spots i marked. once i thought i had enough off i put the assembly back in and checked once more. you'll find out you do this quit frequent. i ended up checking all my clearances 4 times before i was happy with it. You'll need to keep about 0.050" clearance between the parts. Rod bolts to pan rails( about and inch done where the bottom of the cyd.) with my setup i had no problem with the pistons skirts. The cam was the tightest spot. i also ground down where one of the crank counter weights was close to the block it was back by the oil filter hole. you have to grind on the top of the rod bolt and some of the rod also, i didnt like doing this but if you dont they will hit the cam if clearance isnt made.you can get by this really easy if you get a circle track cam or a small base cam. If you don't have 0.050", then grind appropriately. also i went .060" on the clearance at the block to rod. to check for clearnace i used a regular hanger to get to the hard spots, the width of the hanger is very close to .060" after you are done grinding everything, you need to get rid of all the metal shavings, i did this by taken it to the car wash and only used the rinse and blew the crap out of it. i went through the water journal holes on head surface of the block which made it pour out a bunch of nasty stuff that the hot tank left. also once that was done i took it back to the my shop and blew it with air to make sure there wasnt any traped water. then i took oil and a rag and wiped down all the machined parts. (Note: if you are using moly rings you are not suppose to oil the cylinders, if you do the pistons will not seat.)that is only no oil when you are going to drop them in for good. i left the rings out the whole time i was clearancing. thats where im at now.i have yet to plastigage it and next is balancing, after that i think it will be time to reassemble. oh also bravewink
i have allready painted it orange i did that right after i got it back from the machine shop http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif hope that helps wow thats long! just make sure not to short cut the clearances and you'll be fine. cant wait to drop this baby in and have some stang for breakfest, lunch, and DINNER!!!! http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

heads i have a pair that were 1.90 1.50 stock and i ported those about 4 yrs. togo on my 350 now that i have taken them off i gasket matched them and ported some more. as for cam i am running a summit 234/244, .488/.510 lift and has a 112 lobe center this was a great cam for the 350 and probably wouldnt hurt to go alittle bigger 383's are known for bigger cam usage just dont over cam. and for a intake and carb im running a victor jr. with a 1"spacer this also has been ported and gasket matched, carb im going with the 750 puddle dumper i like them the most and should be a good combo. once this is all done and i get some more money im going with a pair of AFR heads the are the best flowing heads i've ever seen and would great with my combo. 190cc are the ones i would choose of all the models. thats pretty much my combo and for future things probably a 150 shot of nos and there is a possiblity of a turbo.(off a semi, its BIG) http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif let me know if you need anything else
