Does anyone rebuild hood hinges. Holes where the rivet is must be worn. Anyone know of anyone that does this or should I just buy new ones. In the event I go new are the aftermarkets any good?

Myfirst 69SS Feb 17th, 09, 05:40 PM Anyone? acelr8 Feb 17th, 09, 06:10 PM GM is still available.Have no experience w/ aftermarket.Jeff hereitis67 Feb 17th, 09, 06:20 PM the aftermarket ones will wobble more than your old ones. buy the gm ones. rszmjt Feb 17th, 09, 09:15 PM I just bought some GM ones for a friends Z28 I am painting, the old ones where real loose. I think maybe a person could press the rivits to tighten them up, but like I told him If they ever break or loosen it could damage the new paint. He choose to buy new GM, although expensive they have nice phosphating and I have my doubts as far as repos. JMO. 69Z28-RS Feb 17th, 09, 10:28 PM I second all the 'Buy GM' recommendations... always.... Gary L Feb 17th, 09, 10:33 PM There is someone that rebuilds the hinges. I will get that name for you. smith69z Feb 18th, 09, 05:31 AM Theres a guy in NY state and a guy in Virginia. When I get home I'll post the webs sites. Myfirst 69SS Feb 18th, 09, 05:55 AM So the new GM hinges come in the correct finish still? smith69z Feb 18th, 09, 06:55 AM http://hoodhingerepair.com/ Just spoke to Willie. Nice guy. I am sending mine tomorrow. $125 per pair. KevinW Feb 18th, 09, 09:30 AM I used the NY one http://www.sms-auto.com/smsauto/public/en/whoWeAre.html They did a nice job. rszmjt Feb 18th, 09, 09:35 AM So the new GM hinges come in the correct finish still? http://hoodhingerepair.com/ Just spoke to Willie. Nice guy. I am sending mine tomorrow. $125 per pair. The GM hinges I just bought in Canada had the correct dull grey/black phosphate finish. Part numbers 3910667/3910668 they are $190.87 for the pair, $65.87 more than repaired hinges. Not sure if any thing is gained repairing the originals, do the repaired hinges come rephospated? Of course the new GM hinges might have minor differences, if anything IMO maybe markings on the rivit heads. http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm Gary L Feb 18th, 09, 11:50 AM I used the NY one http://www.sms-auto.com/smsauto/public/en/whoWeAre.html They did a nice job. SMS is the company I was looking for. They reportedly do good work. ......... if anything IMO maybe markings on the rivit heads...... The rivet heads are correct I believe. Unreal Feb 18th, 09, 12:49 PM SMS is the company I was looking for. They reportedly do god work. Are you saying their work is divine? :D Gary L Feb 18th, 09, 01:29 PM drat, that spell checker! smith69z Feb 18th, 09, 02:44 PM Kevin, Did they come back painted, refinished or bare?(ny) rszmjt Feb 18th, 09, 03:24 PM SMS is the company I was looking for. They reportedly do good work. The rivet heads are correct I believe. Not quite 100%, but close. I just went and looked at the Rivit Head markings on my car, - mine are K with 3 Thick BOLD Circles around the K, the new GM issues have the K but with approx 6-7 small thin circles, other than that they look good. I just went and looked at the Rivit Head markings on my car, - mine are K with 3 Thick BOLD Circles around the K, the new GM issues have the K but with approx 6-7 small thin circles, other than that they look good. I meant compared to the originals, not the GM repros. I need to look at mine when I get home. I think JohnZ or someone discussed this. There are 2 different rivets. My memory is a little fuzzy on this. john68 Feb 18th, 09, 04:58 PM I have a pair of old hinges you can have came off a 68 in 83, I WILL not pay any shipping PM if you are instered KevinW Feb 18th, 09, 05:24 PM Kevin, Did they come back painted, refinished or bare?(ny) Bare steel. I painted them with cast blast. Original rivets have letters in them, I have seen K, A, W. The oversize rivets that SMS puts in do not have the letter, just the concentric circles. rszmjt Feb 18th, 09, 05:52 PM I meant compared to the originals, not the GM repros. I need to look at mine when I get home. I think JohnZ or someone discussed this. There are 2 different rivets. My memory is a little fuzzy on this. ? My Z28 is original 06A and the hinges are the factory ones. The new GM ones I have are for another car, they are still availiable from GM, although expensive. Are the new GM hinges considered Repos? Gary L Feb 18th, 09, 09:59 PM Mike, I only referred to the GM replacements as repros. They probably aren't. I still think I remember a discussion about different rivets. RamAirDave Feb 18th, 09, 11:12 PM Bought a set of GM hinges for a 67 Nova not too long ago. Not a real clean Ph finish on them, more like a cosmolene over the bare metal. |
