I herd talk about this back when the ZR1 came out. Basically this is suppose to be a ZR1 with a back seat.

Well, too bad. If they had made it, the thing to do would be to buy as many as we could and then store them for 40 years. Keep the build sheets and the POP's and then cash in!!!

Maybe a JL8 version as well?

:)

Just hope GM makes it as a company to the end of 2009.

I just read this tonight ??

GM disbands unit that creates high-performance vehicles

General Motors, focusing on mainstream products in a battle to survive, has scrapped a unit that produced high-performance vehicles.

GM on Wednesday disbanded High Performance Vehicle Operations, which is based at the company's suburban Detroit technical center, and redeployed its engineers, spokesman Vince Muniga said.

"All high-performance projects are on indefinite hold," Muniga said. "The engineers are moving into different areas of the organization, and they will work on Cadillacs, Buicks, Chevrolets and Pontiacs."

The unit created low-volume vehicles for GM's divisions designed to appeal to enthusiasts and bolster the company's image. Products included V-series Cadillacs and the Chevrolet Cobalt SS, HHR SS and a V-8 version of the Colorado.

Muniga said there are no plans for high-performance versions of upcoming cars.

The move is in the spirit of GM's viability plan delivered to the U.S. Treasury Department on Tuesday. In the plan, GM said its future-product focus is on fuel- efficient cars and crossovers. It also pledged to increase its current offering of six hybrids to 14 by 2012 and to 26 by 2014. GM also boosted its request for federal aid by as much as $16.6 billion.

The High Performance Vehicle Operations unit could be reinstated once GM regains its financial health, GM's Muniga said.

"These guys are pretty good at what they do," Muniga said, "They are moving into different areas to work on core products."

This news does not apparently affect the SS Camaro. Read more here:

This is correct :D

GM spokesperson Vince Muniga has addressed this concern of ours. He has told InsideLine that:
"You've got the Camaro SS coming out. It is not threatened at all" and will be coming out as planned.

The Camaro SS, Corvette ZR1 and Z06 were all developed as regular production models, and not through the HPVO unit. Hence, all of these vehicles are safe.

It will still affect any future bumps in horsepower. Anyone who wants HP from GM should be buying their car right now. This year is 1969, next year will be 1970 and you know what happened after that!

I disagree. We are talking about a special vehicle team here. I do not think this relates to increasing horsepower in current powertrains.

We are talking about the guys responsible for creating HP. There will be no more R&D on creating a new camshaft for the LS3 for example. These guy are going to work on 4 and 6 bangers. Bob Lutz said last summer "get your ZR1 now" after people were asking about GM's future with respect to performance.

What could they possibly do to make a '10 Z/28? They broke the mold back in 1969. The odd ball 302 was a bastard engine that should not have seen the light of day except for racing. How could they do anything like that again? What type of special engine could they use? Probably only be an appearance package.

Ever heard of the Z06 or ZR1 Corvette? GM has come along way from the decal/appearance only kits like we say on the pathetic 1983-88 Monte Carlo SS for example :D

SS Trailblazers with Corvette type power, I have zero doubt if the Z28 makes it to showrooms it will hardly be an appearance package

My point is that the original Z/28 was a one-off type of vehicle that would not have seen the light of day except to qualify for racing. How would the new Z/28 be different from a new SS? Does GM have an oddball engine to use? They basically have the 6.2L +/- 400 HP and the 7.0L +/- 500 HP engines. What else do they have to use? I can't see the 500 Hp engine as a Z/28 and the 400 HP as an SS is what I am saying. They need to make it different somehow.

I hear what you are saying but those days are gone. Today GM is using state of the art performance technology in their flagship vehicles, ala the ZR1. That is how things are done today IMO

Have you seen the red GMPP Camaro posted in this area? That may be the closest to a COPO type Camaro until the Z28 gets the green light again :D

Well I get the current Motor Trend mag in the mail today. The cover story is the '10 Z/28. Heavy on the visual stuff ... taller spoiler, deep grille, new hood. Inside sources say it is all finished. They say it has the supercharged 556 HP 6.2L as in CTS-V Caddy. Sounds fast. But it is not just true to the history of the car.

The problem is the bailout and what would people think about a car like debuting now.

This is 2009, not 1969. Not sure how else to describe it ;)

Right. The bailout comment was from Motor trend. Any sale would be a good sale these days. Let the BO crowd complain about 556 HP.

What I meant earlier about an appearance package was exactly as MT described. They are taking a pretty nice car and slapping badges on it for no other reason than to call it a Z/28. The Z/28 was never top of the line but it sure sounds like this one might be. I always looked up to the SS396 as the top of the line. Revisionist marketing I guess.

I would like to drive one for sure.:D

Hello, a familiar name! How ya doin? No, sorry we don't! I wish we did! We do the LS3 and LSA engines and many others as well as the HFV6 and cast iron blocks. Our web site gives the details and specs on our engine products. We just added that feature.
Have a good one!
