: Space between hub and spindle?
Hood_Lum Feb 18th, 09, 08:18 AM How big of a gap should there be between the spindle and the hub?
I'm swapping the disc hub with some drum hubs. How do I get the race (i think that's what it's called) out of the disc hub? They seem to be on there really tight.
Thanks
SPARKY69 Feb 18th, 09, 08:23 AM outer wheel bearing with the race should come in a set from federal mogul( advance auto)...use the application your working on.

Hood_Lum Feb 18th, 09, 08:29 AM So the race and bearings are different for drum and disc hubs?
And should the hub be touching the spindle or should there be a slight gap?
SPARKY69 Feb 18th, 09, 08:32 AM they are different...they should be a gap where the spindle comes threw the hub..i dont think you can put a drum on a disc brake spindle!!
Hood_Lum Feb 18th, 09, 08:37 AM I'm not putting a drum on a disc brake spindle.
I'm just putting a drum hub on the spindle so I can mount on LS1 disc brakes.
Thanks for the extremely quick replies by the way. :)
SPARKY69 Feb 18th, 09, 08:41 AM can you use or get a disc brake spindle?? ive never tried the drum spindle set up to use ls1 rotors..somebody here will know though..i dont know that one..
DjD Feb 18th, 09, 09:06 AM Either spindle will work, one you remove material from the upper boss and the other you use a spacer at the upper boss when bolting the caliper bracket on. Other than the boss height the spindles are the same.
Don't reuse the races from the disc hub in your drum hub. Races are pressed in and can be tapped out from behind, you should be able to see a machined area where you can put a drift pin on the race. As suggested get new races with teh drum hub bearings.
If your drum hub races are in all the way, (you can visually tell they are seated looking from the back of the hub) the bearing will position the hub on the spindle properly, I've never paid attention to how close the back of the hub is to the body of the spindle...
Hood_Lum Feb 18th, 09, 09:14 AM Thanks Dennis.
There are no race on the drum hub currently.
I'll get some new race and bearings from a local camaro shop.
Do I need to take the hubs to a shop to get the race pressed in or will they be pressed in properly just by installing it on the spindle?
DjD Feb 18th, 09, 09:47 AM Don't try to to press the race in by installing it on the spindle, you'll crush your bearings. I installed my own but was lent a tool by a TC member that fit the race and allowed me to pound them in. I would recomend taking the hubs to a shop that can do it properly.
Don't forget the longer wheel studs before you mount the hub on the spindle too...
yellow69RS Feb 18th, 09, 09:47 AM Thanks Dennis.

No(to both parts of your question). Place the hub on a work bench or the floor. Tap the race in with the larger diameter of the taper facing you so the bearing can be installed from the side you see. I usually start with just hammer and get it started straight then finish with the old race to drive it the rest of the way. There is a tool to do this with also but I never bought it. Once the races are in, pack the new bearings with grease and install new wheel seal before mounting the hub on spindle.

SPARKY69 Feb 18th, 09, 09:50 AM have you removed the extra material from the upper boss yet?? and do you know how much to take off?

His disc spindles will require a spacer at the upper boss... It's the drum spindles that need the boss machined down.

Hey Oliver - have you had the drum hubs turned down yet so their outer dia fits into the inner dia of the rotor?
Hood_Lum Feb 18th, 09, 11:37 AM Yes, the drum hubs have been turned down to 5.90" so they fit perfectly inside the rotor. I have some washers for the top hub as well but I'm looking for a place to fab a real spacer for me. 4 Washers = .480" but i think .470" would be perfect. I also bought a 5/8"x1.5 fine coarse bolt to replace the original top boss bolt which is only 1" long. Still looking for some grade 8 bolts to hold the caliper on. Currently have grade 5 on for reference and test fit. Ideal size here would be M12x25 1.75 pitch. Right now I have M12x30 and they are a little too long. Hope this info helps for anyone else doing the mod.
pdq67 Feb 19th, 09, 09:45 AM Know all about this stuff.
5.90", thanks! Gotta save that b/c I forgot what mine are???
I had, HAD, a bad left top wisdom tooth and I crushed it grunting on the drivers side top spindle bolt so watch it.
Spit 1/2 of it out then and the rest a day later!! Nerve was dead so never felt a thing!!
