What is the stock head for this motor designated, and valve size? What are the "Camel Hump" heads? Dan

I have the same motor. My heads where 462's with 1.94 intake valves. The "camel hump" is referring to the marking in the front of the head. There should be no accessory bolt holes in them either.

It is a rectangle on it's side with two half circle humps and a space between them. The humps start from the rect's ends.

Somewhere there is a site that illustrates all the head end casting identification marks and it is quite interesting to look over and see what the heads are through the years. pdq67

According to Camaro Restoration Guide 1967-1969 your castings should be 3890462 for early 67 or 3917291 for 67-68
Intake valves @ 1.94"
Exhaust valves @ 1.50"
and Combustion Chambers at 63.31 cc

Well thanks alot for the info. The heads on my 327/275 are "Camel Humps" as they do have the double hump rectangle protrusion and no acc. mounts on them. Are these good heads to get good performance or should I go with Dart Iron Eagles ??? Dan

it really depends on what sort of performance you are looking for... and what sort of RPMs you want the motor to spin.Many variables come into play when choosing heads. Over all the camelhumps are performance good heads, but nothin can compair to modern technology for getting 350-400hp out of your motor.

The camel-bump heads are awesome performance heads - for stock heads. I've used them many times. The 461/462 castings are sought-after by many a hot-rodder to build a hot 327 etc. and have the stock look. But ya can't compete with modern heads thats for sure. I'm replacing my camel-humps w/ a pair of Trick Flow 23 Degree alumn heads.

Was considering the Vortecs but wanted to go alumn and use the intake / headers I already have.

The Camel Hump heads are desirable from a restoration/nostalgia viewpoint. If you are not into that, the only other reason to use them is the fact that you already have them.

They are usualy pretty valuable to someone who is into correct restoration/nostalgia as they were the best factory heads avalable in their day. The aftermarket heads will make significantly more power and the cost benefit equation becomes important. You can compare the cost by adding the value to someone else for the old heads if you were to sell them plus the cost of the new valve job and all the parts required. Take that number and compare to buying a complete brand new ready to run set of aftermarket heads and the $$$ numbers alone will probably get you to switch. More power at roughly the same cost and all new stuff. That is about all there is to it.

What is the difference between the 291 and 462 castings for '67?

My April built '67 has the 291 casting.

Funk, they are basicaly the same except for on the 291 the temp sender boss was added but possibly not machined and the valve guide boss is bigger on the 291 as well.
