I was under my car this past weekend and saw this hole in the body. It looks to be punched, not drilled, so I think it might be a factory hole. Any idea what it is for?

Is this the extra hole in the welded on bracket itself near the bumber assem. or the one that looks like a 'drain' hole in the front trunk pan area ???
The trunk one has/had a plug in it IIRC...

I've seen some wierd extra holes in odd areas before and always fiqured they were only to help drain the e-coat primer after the body went 'swimming' during the assembly paint process.

I'm not familiar with that hole, but there are also cases where they are 'jig' holes to hold the metal in alignment when the parts are pressed into shape, etc.. Usually those holes aren't just left as open holes....

I doubt that a 1/2" hole in the floor would be left open.

Both my '67 and '69 have the hole. I suspect some sort of drainage as mentioned.

Yes, Jim and Dave, that is it. Is there supposed to be a plug? I didn't check to see if it is a blind hole. Maybe there is sheet metal covering it. Help JohnZ.

Yeah, definitely a question for JohnZ.

To be honest, I don't recall ever removing one from there. In that pic I posted, you can see the plugs in the wheel houses were left in, don't see why (nor remember) just removing that one

edit: I just looked through a bunch of pics of cars we've restored or eval'd. Tricky place to get in the pic if you aren't trying, but found it on several cars. Hole is there, but no plug on all that are visible. You'd think there should be one, though...

My guess is it is a drain hole for the blind chamber created by the trunk header(?) - the portion of the floor between the rear seat back and trunk floor and this brace.

You don't see the opposite contour on the interior floor? Its pretty much flat panels.
