I have a original 68 SS L-48 car. I pulled out the 350 and rebuilt the motor. In the process I replaced the motor mounts and trans mount. I then put the motor back in the car and now the drivers side exhaust manifold is touching the power steering gear box. Everything is original to the car. What have I done and what can I do to fix it???

Sounds like the replacement motor mounts may not be as thick as the originals. You can find a bunch of info on motor mounts here.

350 mounts are different than 307/327 ones.

Thanks-Who do you think has the best replacement motor mounts?

Not sure. Maybe others have opinions on that. I haven't replaced any lately but the topic came up recently in posts about header fitment.
Good luck!

O.K. One more question about it. My manifold on the driver side has the exstension to mount the alternator. Did GM make different types of these manifolds for other cars. Could I have the wrong manifold?

I'm no expert but if it looks like this in the photo, I'd assume it to be correct.

When I reinstalled my b/b, I was planning to go back with NOS interlocking motor mounts, rather than the NOS non-interlocking ones I had. Turns out I only had one NOS interlocking one and one aftermarket. After doing some very, very careful measuring, I determined that the aftermarket one was just like the GM one, so I decided to buy one more aftermarket one and go with them. When I installed the motor, one mount was off by a little less than 1/2 hole. I loosened one tower and got the bolt in, and then re-tightened the tower.

Guess what...close, but no cigar. The belts will not fit between the crank pulley and the crossmember on the subframe. I have to remove the crank pulley to get them on!

Moral of the story....Use Real GM whenever possible!!!

Thanks for all the responses. I think I figured out the problem. The driver side manifold that I used was off an Impala since I removed the original that had smog. My original is concave for the power steering gear box where the one I used is straight. Now I need to figure out how to either fix it or put the original back on with the smog holes plugged. Any suggestions?
