The L78 402 has an 8000 tach, but a L34 would have a 7000 tach, Is this correct? Thanks!

Sounds correct. Only the solid lifter engines like the the Z28 LT1 and BBC SS L78 models had 8000 rpm tachometers. Check out nasty Z28 site. They have excellent info Re: 2nd Gen Tachometers.

Can't find that stupid link but when I think about it only the 70 and 71 Z had an 8000 rpm Tach Yellow line 5500 to 6500 and Red Line 6500 to 8000 rpm. The 70 L78 had a 7000 rpm Tach with a Yellow 5700 to 6500 and 6500 to 7000rpm red Line (Very Rare Tach as rare as the 70 L78 SS).

Thanks, Good info as usual. I came across an L34 and bought it. Yellow starts at 5200 and ends at 5500, Orange (or red) starts at 5500 and ends at 7000. May made '70 L34 SS that he pro-toured. Spectacular car. Got lucky getting the tach. I was told that all '70 BB had 8000 tachs. Again, thanks for the info.

Just UpDating: ONLY the 8000 Z 28 Tach was different. The L78 Tach was nothing more then the STD 7000 Tach with the face Painted differently with the higher Yellow and Red Zones. There is someone refinishing the std Face Tachs OnLine and selling them for a fortune claiming they are original L78 Tach's - LOL. There were only 200 70 L78 made so there should not be more then 200 OEM STD Tachs with faces painted to reflect the Solid Lifter L78 engine.

Another thing: The U14 Special Instrument Cluster and F41 Suspension came as a STD feature when ordering the Z28 Package. You could order the U14 and F41 Options with any Model of Camaro including a 6 Cyl. Both the U14 and F41 Options had to be ordered specifically if you choose the SS Option or it was not included - considering that the SS options did not mean the car had a Big Block.

However; Both the Z 28 and the SS did receive the 12 Bolt. Then again I'm certain that I have come across cases were I have seen a 10 bolt in an SS model. This 12 Vs 10 Bolt SS scenario seems prevalent with the 69 models as well.

Thanks Ron. Could a 3-speed come with a 350 in '71?. Just asking!

I can't see why not. Either on the column or on the floor and it would not make any difference if it was a plane Custom or had SS or RS options or had the U14 Cluster or F41 suspension. I would guess it could have either the Saginaw or Muncie 3 Speed Manual transmission. I may be wrong but don't think so.

If I recall a buddy of mine had a 6 cly, 3 on the tree with the F41 suspension. Man that thing could fly on the back roads.

NASTYZ28 site has about the BEST early 2nd GEN info. Check it out.

second gen camaros never had a standard shift 3 speed on the column . all 3 speed bace manual transmitions were floor shifted (as per the assembly manual).as far as F 41 and the ss big block, yes F 41 was part of the big block package. here is a page out of the 70 sales brochure. the only diffrence in the F 41 on the z and the F 41 on th BB SS was the tire size with the z being the ONLY camaro to get 15 inch tires. it states rear anti sway bar and the only was to get a rear anti sway bar was the F 41 suspension package http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh155/stinsonz/70bro-3.jpg

Mike: Hey GREAT info there ;o)

Strange they say 396 BB rather then 402; however, I do believe they used old 396 castings that were rather rusty so they just bored them out and called them either a 396 or 402.

Humm - No bumberettes?

from what i heard , chevy knew the ss 396 was iconic by the end of the 69 model year and were hesitant to call it a 402 in 70 as fear that people identify the two as different. by then the 396 had quite a following but as you said it definitely speced out to 402 by 70. from my info only the z got the rear bumper guards as standard

My L34 also has a 7000 RPM tach that goes yellow at 5200 and red at 5500, as you described. It's good to compare notes!
