Hi guys,
for the last two months the interior lights have worked fine in my 67. All of a sudden a fuse shorts out. I replace it and it works approx. 3 days then it burns up. Now when I try to place a new fuse in the holder sparks fly. What is happening? Thanks again from the rookie.

If your car happens to have more than one interior lamp, I'll bet one of them has the positive (+12 dc) cable shorted to ground (body metal). You may have to disconnect them one by one (the lamp ass'y) and sacrifice a few fuses. One every disconection until no more fuses burn, then you have located the one thats giving you problems. This is in case you aren't familiar with an ohm meter, so you could measure continuity to ground with the lamp bulbs removed. Hope this help you.

Hi Orench,
I took out all the light bulbs and there is still sparks when I try to place a fuse in the holder. Now what? I also tried to visually find any openings where wire could be exposed but was unable to find any. Thanks for your help on this one. What a great Friday night project.

Gambler,
Try to put the fuse in while holding the door plunger in the closed postition with the other door closed, if that dosen't help then I suspect that you have a power wire to the fuse box shorting out somewhere (touching a ground).
Just so you have a reference the door jamb wires are a 20ga white wire and the dome light is a 20ga white along with a 20ga orange. the courtesy lights are the same.

I have a factory wiring schematic which I will try to scan and see if it is ledgable for you.

Even with the lamps removed you might have a positive cable shorted to ground behind the lamp assembly or somewhere in betwen them and the fuse panel. I think it will take the removal of every lamp ass'y. I'm positive you have a cable shorted to metal some place but it's difficult to know where. Good luck.

Hi Guys,
Thanks again for all the help. I just love this site. For beginners such as myself it is great to be able to pick the minds of people with more advanced knowledge than myself. I am just amazed that this time last week everything was working fine then, BAM, anothe problem to solve.

Gambler,
I have the Body harness and interior wire diagrams scanned. If you send me your E-MAIL address I will send them to you if you need them.

Another thought,
How common is it for the fuse box itself to go bad? Maybe the connectors for this particular fuse is bad? Thinking out loud here.

tHOUGH MY experience stuff like that doesn't usually happen its usually something stupid and obvious. something easy that you don't see at first, you won't see it and your mind starts to jump around and come up with other things stick to the basics and double check everything theres probalby something that slipped your mind.

Remove all the bulbs and place a test light in series with the fuse that's burning out.
One end of test light to each side of the fuse terminal.
Go around and unplug and wiggle parts of the harness while watching the light, that way you can tell when you find the short.
It might be a bad light socket.

Is there anything else on that fuse? Sometimes lighter, radio etc... share a common fuse and it might not even be the lights causing the problem. Does everything but interior lights work? Just don't want you to chase the wrong problem.

Hi Phel,
Everyting else on the car works. radio, wipers. All seems to be in working order. Strange how this happened all of a sudden.

Gambler,
Most of these happen if a connection gets wet or a wire gets pinched or chaffed by something rubbing on it. What was the last thing (repair or modification) that you did to the interior and how long ago? I have been looking at my wire diagrams and there are a number of possiblities to consider, The most common is the door jam switch, then there are the light sockets (includeing the ones under the dash and in the glove box if equiped).
I have gotten pretty good at wiring problems as I have gotten to rewire two camaros with just diagrams and trial and error (the first was before aftermarket harnesses were available).
