i was told this transmission came out of a 72 monte carlo and was a muncie.the guy told me someone else had looked at it and said the same thing a muncie.i should have trusted my better judgment on this and not bought it.the trans looks kind of like one but not.and has a hurst 4 speed shifter on it.he said if i wanted to have it checked out and if it wasnt what i was looking for he would return my money.(((well guess what he wont.)))lesson learned.i took it to a transmission shop and they told me its a 833 from a chevy pickup and that people used this in their cars to.my drive shaft slides in fine,it has a 10 spline on the front and is as long as the muncie.he said 4th gear is an over drive and 3rd is the main drive and that its stronger than the muncie and super T10,and would get better gas mileage with the od.so before i put this in my 80 camaro, has anyone had any dealing with this transmission?????thanks for any help..TIM.

Everything he told you is correct and I wish I had one of them. You do have to have the original belhousing for it.The mounting holes are different than a regular Chevy.

These transmissions would help out on engine wear and gas mileage. If you don't mind missing one gear and trading for an od trans, this would work well. Find the bellhousing and you got it.

i found the bell houseing at the wrecking yard for 50 bucks, the trans was 350 with the hurst shifter.the transmission has the same bell housing bolt pattern as a muncie, but the center of it was bigger, around the front bearing housing,so ill have to go back to the wrecking yard and get the housing that fit it for 50.just makeing sure i can use this before i get carried away with buying parts.

Bird, I believe you are correct, the application mentions useage in trucks. But if it fits, use it, get the benefit of an Od trans. http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-speeds/ODA833fourspeed1.htm

I would not be embarrassed , I used a proshifted, ford top loader with the large input shaft in my H/mp 55 race car , for none other reason everything else afffordable , broke.

All my 69 Roadrunners I owned in the past, and were equipped with a 383 and 3.91 sure grip rear end, were equipped with an A-833 4 speed tranny!.....I never did enjoy replacing clutches as these SOB's were HEAVY cast iron units!

This model of the 833 , is said to be had in an Od version, did you actually see them? I do recall a hemi RR that was at my shop, had a heavy 4 speed but even heavier Hone-a-drive unit behind it. hone a drive was an external od unit .

I know ford made a batch of top loader 4 speeds that were in the Mercury Monarchs and the ford fairmonts.

They used the OD version in 80-86 Chevy trucks. It has GM input shaft and TH350 size output.Basically its a 3 speed with overdrive. 3.09:1 - 1.67:1 - 1:1 - 0.73:1 With 3.08 to 3.55 gears you would have a nice street trans. for cheap.

Never heard of this overdrive tranny!....You must remember, I'm stuck in the 70's and the word "overdrive" wasn't even in my vocabulary!.....I've heard of the hemi version of this tranny which was virtually blowproof!.....Like I said, it wasn't pleasant doing a clutch job because that tranny weighed a ton!.....And this was back in my youth!

Chrysler first used it in 75 in Dusters and Darts later in their own trucks. What they did was make 4th 3rd and make 3rd overdrive. Its basically the old trans. with a gear swap.

Perhaps the reason I've never heard of these units is because I was never into Mopar 6 cylinders or trucks!.....I just dug the big boys ie 383, 426 hemi and 440 (4 bbl & 6 packs)

I hear you! my back still hurts just thinking about them! LOL.

The short A & E body versions are 140lbs of misery to change, double the weight of a Muncie BTW. I used the Cast Iron A833 Hemi Box in my old S/G,S/C Vega, I had 4 completes with shifters, they were all proshifted with Liberty Gears, I would change them between rounds sometimes if I burred a Slider. Ugly Heavy Trannys, but they stood up Pretty Good, 3rd gear was the wink link. I finally got tired of dependability and bought a Lenco.

The 833 OD version uses the Aluminum Case and Tailhousing BTW. The 23 Spline A833 were very similar except the gears are not brass sleeved like the Hemis Box. Same Syncro Assemblys except there were also 2 versions of them.

News to me they used them in Chev 1/2 tons , Thanks for the info.

Spent half the day hunting this link.I had mistakenly deleted it.A friend saved it and sent it to me last night.Don't tell anybody or everyone will be using them. http://www.classicjunkyard.com/new_process_a833.htm

You can tell the OD A833's b/c the 3rd/4th gear lever will point down if not mistaken.

And I finally got rid of my good A833 that came out of my Brother's '70.5 T/A 340 6-Pack after years and years.

Still have a good core 340/360 727 3-speed automatic if anybody will make an offer?? No converter tho.

I used to have one of these in my Chevy 82 truck. The truck transmissions have a TH400 output spline & a pretty steep first gear. The problem I had with this trans, is it has a smaller metric input shaft bearing than the normal chrysler trans & they went bad quite often. I also broke 2 cluster gears behind a mild small block. Gear spreads are pretty large. Personally I would stay away from this trans due to durablilty issues.

They are only rated at 275 t if not mistaken.
