Don't think so???

I think a good 468 would get you there if you build it like a BSE motor, though... No problem there... pdq67

PS., guy's how far off am I on the 396 motor he is proposing???

That cam is Too big for what you want.
I agree with Paul that you're better off with a 468 built to "BSE" specs with a carefully selected solid flat tappet cam.
If you're already on your way with the 396 consider something like the Comp Cams Xtreme SOLID flat tappet XS274S-10
Its specs are:
274/280 dur adv
236/240 dur .050"
.568/.578" lift (1.7 ratio)
110 LSA

If you do decide on a 468 this cam or the next step up (282XS) should suit goals.

I already have the 396 going, i couldnt find a 454 for a high school budget. The Crane cam is almost identicle to the Ultradyne 288/296 that most people with BSE run ....except for the duration. The engine already has the lower end built, so i would like to stick with it. Any thing else i can do besides the cam and heads? Is this close to 450 BHP..that was my goal.-Dan

You need to add one thing --- 2.19/1.88 valves.
A buddy of mine has a 68 caprice, factory 396/TH400 car,
it was running mid 12s with a BG750, stealth intake, and a mild hyd cam (around 230 dur.)
He had a problem with the heads (dont remember what, valve train I think, too long ago)
Anyway he had the 781s redone with 2.19/1.88s and the car ran 12.20s all day long!
This is a 3900lbs boat, and had 4.11s
So if your car is lighter I'd say it should go high 11s, since this should be good for 450+hp.

The crane has 10 degrees more exhaust duration on the seat.
Thats not a small difference.
I suggest the Comp XS cam, its a solid so it'll make more power there and it's a smaller grind.
Ethier that or buy the Ultradyne grind.

Please take the time to read Pat Kelley's great Dynamic Compression Ratio Calculator site. Do a search for it.

I think what you need to do is try to build your engine right at below the max. dynamic CR. that you can use with pump gas. Doing so will set your cam regardless of whose it is.. But UDHarold at Ultradyne grinds some very good cam's!!!

I think it should be right at or a schosh below 8.0 DCR., but read up on it so that you get what you really want. I am a fan of the solid cams and tend to build my motors for grunt!

Why wrap heck outta it b/c first, they wear out faster and second, you wind one out in traffic and it becomes a real big LOUD Cop-Caller!!!

As alway's, jmho... pdq67

CNC- where do you find the solid Extreme'S, I looked everywhere, even their site and catalog, but can't find them, they aren't listed! any ideas where to find listing's on these cams?
