My Exec VP told me he had a 4 speed chevy with a Hurst "Bastard" shifter. He said there were very few made. He's not the type to make something up but his memory could be foggy. Anybody have info on such a thing?

A "bastard shifter" is a term for a shifter that was not intended for the car or tranny but made to worked. There is another word that was often use, it was "bastardized" I guess none of you had any real old school hodrod or gearhead mentor when you started into cars... :D

O yea but we used a diffrent term around here. Used a torch modified rods, fliped levers
and all, I guess I am getting to old

I still have the Hot Rod article that shows how to use a 3-speed Sychro-lok shifter on a 4-speed. They used a second lever off to the left to go into reverse.

Fox made a cheap shifter too back then. Flat chrome handle

I had a 3-speed Mystery Shifter in my '57. I think it had a round rod chrome handle, it's been years and it lasted a night in the boneyard before it was swiped after I totaled it!

There was a Hurst Master shifter. I believe it was a 3 speed shifter made to fit the many cars that needed to convert a sloppy 3 on the tree to a floor shifter.

I don't think Hurst would use the name Bastard Shifter

I had a Sparkomatic shifter on a '65 Galaxie. I called it all the names listed above.

If you really want to know give a call to Moroso and ask for Howard Maseles. He was the shifty doctor during the 60's and 70's. He now drives the race rig for Moroso. He was the guy responsible for setting up the Hurst racer support at the track, rebuilding shifters, Scheifer clutches and driving Linda down the strip with the big stick!
I used to love the stories he would tell us about life at the track before all the corporate bs made things politically correct. They had a hell of a time back then!
