: 1967 Muncie conversion
keithl1967 Mar 2nd, 09, 06:27 PM OK--I've got a couple of questions...
I am converting my 67 from an auto (TH400) to a Manual (Muncie).
I just purchased a rebuilt Muncie (M20)out of a 1965 Corvette--the driveshaft gear is on the driver side--which I thought would be better since the auto speedo gear is on the driverside; however, it now occurs to me that the speedo cable may interfere with the operation of a Hurst shifter:
a. Is this the case, and if so, is there a "workaround"--an adapter or something other than finding a new tailshaft for the tranny
b. Would I be better off with a repro "Muncie" shifter--int he book, it looks liek it might provide better clearance
Thanks
Nantooch Mar 2nd, 09, 07:09 PM I just recently did the same swap. Though I went with the muncie shifter as funds wouldnt allow a competition shifter that I wanted. I don't see why the cable would interfer. Run the cable either up through the frame rail and out just as it bends up or use some 1/4" clamps.. Can find them in the electrical dept at either lowes or HD. Listed as clamps for #4 ground wire. Use some self tappers to hold em in place.
Farm Boy Mar 2nd, 09, 07:18 PM I have a Muncie with a driver’s side speedometer and a Hurst shifter in my '67. The stock speedometer cable fits perfect with no interference with the Hurst shifter or linkage.

OUTSTANDING--THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED TO SEE!!! The bnous is seeing the reverse switch hookup as well! Thanks again!
keithl1967 Mar 2nd, 09, 07:52 PM OK...another question, since you've done the conversion:
How do I know where to cut the hole in the floor for the shifter (I will be running a console)?
Farm Boy Mar 2nd, 09, 08:29 PM My car came with a Saginaw so the shifter hole was cut at the factory. Here is a picture of the hole with the reinforcement. The picture was taken from under the car with the transmission out looking up . You can see my radio and heater controls through the hole.

TOM BARKLEY Mar 2nd, 09, 08:56 PM All 67 floorshift cars wether auto or stck had the same floor hole. Did you have a column shift?

I did have a colum shift--originally a Powerglide car (and inline 6 for that matter)...swapped to a 350 and a TH400...not has a 383 and a TH400...converting to Muncie...
Eric Kammerer Mar 3rd, 09, 07:00 AM Info on locating the hole in the factory 67-68 location is in this thread: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=134060&highlight=shifter+hole
Just confirm that the hole as laid out from the above thread is close to the right place with whatever shifter you select.

Another question--can I use the "factory" backup switch assembly, or do I need to buy the "hurst universal" backup switch and their wire harness?
IN the photo, it looks like you may be using the stock switch, but I was told by one of the companies that sell the Hurst shifter (and BOTH switch assemblies) that I have to use the Hurst switch...

Also, how do I know where to place the console?
Nantooch Mar 15th, 09, 04:02 PM If you'll look at the pic in the post by Farm Boy, You'll see two bolts/screws. That's where the mount goes to screw the console too. Should be present on yours as well.

I did take note of that; however, thes eholes are not "pre-drilled"...any idea what the specific measurments are to place these holes in the correct location?
They appear to go directly in th emiddle of the twi "dimple" lines--is this correct, dead center?
Nantooch Mar 15th, 09, 07:05 PM As far as I can remember yes. Do you have the console and mount plate? If so, you can verify by putting them in place. This would also help with your shifter location as well.
keithl1967 Mar 15th, 09, 08:08 PM mount plate is on its way (just ordered today)...anyway--The auto is still inthe car, so right now, both the shifter (B&M megashifter) and the transmission are int he way (of bolitint he bracket in place)...Just trying to do my homework before I start drilling/cutting the car up...
Eric Kammerer Mar 16th, 09, 04:50 AM Have you bought the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) for 67 yet? The page for RPO/UPC D55 will show you what size the holes should be drilled and how the console mounts. We have a link for the 67 AIM in PDF format, but whoever scanned it stopped before he got to the options portion of the manual.
If you haven't bought the AIM, then maybe you can start a new post asking someone to scan and email you the D55 pages. I have the 68 and 69 AIM, but because the 67 console is different, I am not sure the newer AIM pages would help.

I used the factory backup light switch. The Hurst reverse lever came pre-drilled for the factory link rod that activates the switch. It went together easy and it works perfect.
If you want to use tha factory setup you will need the switch, mounting bracket, lower shield, and the link rod. All of these parts are available new.

keithl1967 Mar 16th, 09, 05:11 PM Thanks Farm boy--a photo is worht a thousand words!
keithl1967 Mar 20th, 09, 03:57 PM More questions...I just received the Clutch linkage kit that I ordered from CI. Granted I am not familiar with it, and have not assembled it yet, but the stud seems to have some "play" when placed into the bracket in the bracket (very slight rocking back and forth), and it seems extremely "tight" when trying to rotate it on the stud(in other words, seems like it will need a LOT of pedal pressure, and not sure that the springs will be strong enouth to "return" it.
1. Is the "play" in the stud to bracket normal
2. Is this so tight on the rotation only because I have not greased it yet? Has anyone had problems with the CI kit before?
Kameno70 Mar 29th, 09, 02:49 PM Does anyone know where i can purchase the reverse light switch wiring? I just bought a M-20 for my El Camino and someone cut the wires. So i'd like to just have a new wiring harness for it to plug in, but have yet to find one.
and i agree...pics are def worth it!!!!
TOM BARKLEY Mar 29th, 09, 09:43 PM Corvettes do not use a L/s speedo they are R/s on the tail housing. That tail housing is from another GM car.
Farm Boy Mar 29th, 09, 11:43 PM Corvettes do not use a L/s speedo they are R/s on the tail housing. That tail housing is from another GM car. The transmission is from a 1966 Pontiac GTO. The LH speedometer drive worked out well for me as I did not have to reroute my speedometer cable when I put it in my '67 Camaro which originally had a Saginaw.
keithl1967 May 2nd, 09, 11:16 AM It's been a while as I continue to pick up parts...I picke dup a "621" bellhousing at Carlisle tlast week...I tried "test fitting" everything...I cannot seem to get th ebellhousing to sit flucsh withthe Muncie...what I am I doing wrong, and are htere any "tricks" to this? I already tried sanding th epaint off of the bellhousing(it jsut does not want to seem to slide over the input shaft retainer...

OK--I guess I'm resurrecting a thread here, but another question--where is the proper mounting location for the console bracket on a '67...
In this photo, it looks like it is between the two "dimples" in the tunnel...I have seen other photos where the bracket is located in front of these "dimples"?
keithl1967 Jul 13th, 09, 06:48 PM OUTSTANDING--THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED TO SEE!!! The bnous is seeing the reverse switch hookup as well! Thanks again!
Does it matter how you orient the shifter ("rocked" backwards or Forwards)? I cannot really tell by the photo, and the instructions say, rock backward or forward, depending upon "preference"...is this right?

Does anyone know where I can get the clips that hold the reverse actuator rod in place...IN my assembly, I lost one. I'd rather not buy the whole bar assebly just to get the clips!
Thanks
