for cheap... how does the car run right now? Are you looking for more horses, more traction, better look? For horses, an exhaust system and headers will give you a bit of a kick in the pants for under $500 depending on which manufacturer you go with. Tune what you have now so that it performs as best it can, then see what you still want.

a nos kit is no cheap venture - especially if you want your engine to be safe

try checking out your engine timing and advance the engine a little bit - you will feel a little more power

the ideal is to free up the exhaust with cheap headers and better exhaust

if carbureted, you can try and score a edelbrock performer intake and carb combo - the little 600 carb on my 305 with headers felt much better than the stock setup and stock exhaust manifolds -

Everything depends on Virginia's emissions laws. There is no such thing as a set of cheap emissions legal headers for a third gen. You can put a good down payment on another car for what most companies charge for them. Unlesss they have come down in price significantly, they are $300 - $400 depending on the manufacturer. You could try to get away with standard headers. They would be a lot cheaper, but of course, not legal.

You may not be able to replace your carb with an aftermarket one. The stock carb is computer controlled.

Start by modifying the head pipes that go from the exhaust manifolds to the catalytic convertor. The drivers side pipe "T" s into the passenger side pipe and the flow is terrible. Someone should make a kit for this. Then go with a cat back system. If you "accidentally" mess up your catalytic converter in the process, you would "have" to buy a replacement high flow unit - too bad. Unfortunately, all of this won't be cheap.

You can also do the standard computer conrolled car stuff like replace the air filter with a K&N, get a HyperTech chip, underdrive pulleys, etc...

Yeah i know i can't replace it without scraping the comp in it, but i talked to a local Performance store they told me scrap the pc and don't worry whose really gonna check under the dash for the pc i mean i can leave it in for the look but no inspection i have seen they have opened the car and looked for the comp.

edelbrock performer manifold is street legal, and so is the performer cam, it would be about 200 dollars total.
although, the cam is no fun to put in a 3rd gen.

cheap hp = NO2. Entry level kits are easy to install and if you keep your car tuned and if you don’t use it at every stop light you will be fine. If a engine can't handle an entry level system then you shouldn’t be modifying the car anyway with expensive add on parts as an old tired motor wont see much improvement with fancy speed shop add on parts. If and when you go to sell the car, just take the NO2 off and it will be back to stock. Replacing exhaust and intakes is great but lets see the total cost of replacing that stuff. The actual performance gains and the fact you now have replaced parts on the car that were working ok before they were thrown away. I think the problem with people getting into hot rodding is what do you really want to do with a car. Make it sound and look fast (cherry bombs and chrome) or make it fast for real.

I agree with Toby T.
If you take your first $100.00 and do a complete tune up with good parts and the add a 100HP shot of Nitrous (as long as your motor is in good shape) you will not have any problems that you wouldn't have doing any other mods.
Where guys get into trouble is they keep adding more Nitrous until things explode. If you use it smartly and listen to your motor it will work.

The motor is in good shape it's got 83K miles on it and it's an 84. Thats rughly 5000miles a year. It runs great i just wanna be able to go up to langley with my neighbor and beat the crap out of his Mustang GT. When i sell my old car thats what i am gonna do:

1. Scrap Comp
2. Edelbrock T.E.S. Headers and Y-Pipe pn 6874
3. Edelbrock Performer EPS 800cfm Carburetor pn 1413
4. Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake Manifold pn 7101
5. Comp Cams High Energy 268/268 Camshaft Kit pn K122102
6. K&N Air Filter Assembly pn 60-1430
7. March Performance V-Groove Underdrive Pulley Set pn 6090

and if funds alow a new paint job and flowmaster cat-back probebly just paint.

Do you think that cam and carb is a little much? i don't know to much about grinds the local speed shop told me stick with 260's so i picked a 268 but i thinking of a smaller card that 1 is 300dollars and i don't think i gonna need 800sfm got any sugetions?

Way too much carb...a regular performer intake and 600 edelbrock would be better. That cam might be ok, depending on your gearing. Should sound pretty healthy in a 305.

yeah thought it was too much :P But your saying i need to go down to the Edelbrok Performer Intake and not the RPM version and a 600 or 650 carb right? i think that'll be better on my wallet too http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Since you are set on doing it on the motor alone I would drop the cam size down one, go with the performer and a 600 cfm carb. You say that you are running a "carburated 305". If so your heads have 58cc chambers and they are the smallest valve SBC heads made by Chevy. This is going to limit you to how much airflow you can use, the RPM is way to much intake. You should stay around idle to 5000 rpm range.
You might also consider a shift kit for your trans.
