View Full Version : 68 Camaro A/S Stock Eliminator video
NHRA 3168 Mar 4th, 09, 07:18 AM A friend of mine races a 68 Camaro in NHRA stock eliminator in A/S which is 396 with a 4 speed. While participating in the Jegs All Star race in Joliet IL they had a the super slow motion cameras in use for the National Event ESPN coverage. They used his car in one of the introductions with the slow motion camera. He was able to get a good copy from NHRA he has posted to Youtube.
It is a pretty unique launch shot and you can even see the chalk dust come off the wheelie bar.

markw Mar 4th, 09, 05:49 PM What is happening to the front tires when they touch down?
Everett#2390 Mar 4th, 09, 07:02 PM Nice launch, straight, even, until bumpsteer happens.
Eleanor's Nemesis Mar 4th, 09, 09:09 PM Is that Troy Henderson?
NHRA 3168 Mar 5th, 09, 07:13 AM That is Troy Henderson after he painted it black for 2008. He has quite a few videos posted on his Youtube account of his car and some other really nice 67-69 Camaros in stock.
As for the when the car lands it is amazing what you can see when you slow down the camera and look at a launch that closely. Probably happening to more cars than people think.
Eleanor's Nemesis Mar 5th, 09, 07:29 AM I go to Indy every year for the Nationals, love to watch the class elims on thursday and friday. I can't remember the name of who won A/S this year, I think it was a red 67/8 396 camaro. Adkins with his Cobra Jet Shelby was the fastest car, but spun bad in the finals.
Troy is fast and has a great looking car.
NHRA 3168 Mar 5th, 09, 08:13 AM Brett McFarland won A/S this year in a red 68 Camaro. Adkins car is fast and they flogged on it pretty hard all week at Indy too. Somebody put the whole thing up on youtube filmed from about half track but I don't have the link handy. Troy raced in it too. Brett McFarland's win was rewarded with a visit to NHRA teardown and he passed it with flying colors.
My brother organized the A/S challenge for Indy this year and had an extra $1500 in cash and contingencies for the winner in A/S that he awarded right at the track. My brother and I love the stick shift stock/super stock cars and he has done the challenge at a couple of races in a couple of different stock eliminator classes. It defintely increases the car count for the class races where we have done it. I think we ended up with 9 cars at Indy? It was even picked up by Drag News for an article.
He had t-shirts made that had a retro look too. The back of the shirt is on the left and the vertical stripe on the right was on the front. All the competitors got a shirt for free.

Speaking of going to Indy every year for the US Nationals, this year will be my 28th year in a row. Nothing like the atmosphere with over a thousand entries attending.
Eleanor's Nemesis Mar 5th, 09, 06:42 PM Great to see some other class racing fans here!
I love the stuff :)
The Nationals has the best class racing of the year. I dig the stick cars too :)
I hope the first gen camaro guys are tuned up on kill for real this year-those bogus HP rated Mustangs are going to fly, can't believe NHRA hosed everyone with allowing those cars in like they did.
Okay, Indy '08.....I thoroughly enjoyed seeing DeFrank outrun Bill hawk in the final of B/SA....what were there like 15 B/SA cars?
Of course if y'all remember all the buzz in SS was about the '64 Thunderbolts in SS/B, Paul Adams and the other white one. I was smilin' after Jimmy Bridges rowed the gears on his '66 Vette and got the win, all 4 cars qualified within about a hundredth of each other.
anyway...I could talk about that stuff all night, lol. I just picked up a '69 camaro body a month ago that I'm going to build into a SS car....not sure what class I will run it in, but 99% sure it will have a stick in it.
Hope to be makin' noise at Indy in 2010 :)
NHRA 3168 Mar 6th, 09, 07:11 AM Go with the stick. The automatics are really good these days but very pricey for what the stock/super stock guys run. Sometimes racers lose sight of how good a jerico and soft lock clutch works and doesn't break. The on track experience is worth it. If you've never seen the in car video of Fiacci going 9.90 in his A/S 68 Camaro you have to find it on Youtube. Shifting second gear in the air and rowing the gears down the track is more fun.
We haven't missed Indy since we started going as kids in 1983. My brother even won stock eliminator at Indy in 2000 in a stick shift 65 Chevelle. Here is what our car looks like.

The big block Camaros are flying in the lower classes in stock eliminator right now. It is not for the light hearted though. A friend of mine finished a big block for his 65 Corvette last year that he races in A/S. The motor has been in and out of the car and on the dyno to reach the guys at the top of the class. Definitely not cheap when I compare it to what my brother and I put into the 283 and 327 motors we run in stock.
