: New wheel choice if you like Torq Thrusts
Steiner Mar 5th, 09, 11:46 PM Thought I'd share this. First off, thanks to those hundreds ahead of me who posted Q&A about the best tire/wheel sizes.
Discount Tire Direct has a new wheel by MB Motoring (Voxx) called the "Old School". They don't have pictures of it anywhere, not even in stores. It is basically a Torq Thrust II knock-off (heck, even American Racing has three or four knock-offs of their own rim) and is available in gunmetal, black, and chrome. I finally found the right combo of terms to use in google to find a picture. Here's a link:
http://www.challengertalk.com/forums/f31/introducing-mb-motoring-old-school-10926/
I just purchased a complete tire and wheel set mounted and balanced for $998 shipped with:
Two 17x8 chrome, 7 offset (4.75" backspace)
Two 17x9.5 chrome, 7 offset (5.5" backspace)
Two Hankook 235/45-ZR17
Two Hankook 275/40-ZR17
Ordering the complete disc brake upgrade from Matt's Classic Bowties tomorrow....
FadedSS Mar 6th, 09, 01:09 AM i like those. what kind of car do you have? i wonder if they make sizes to fit my 67 camaro...?
1st 67 SS/RS Mar 6th, 09, 02:04 AM Nice looking rims. I second that on the fitting a 67.

I have a '69 Camaro. By reading through pages and pages of the sticky post at the top of the forum, the best looks and fit seemed to be the sizes that I listed and purchased. If you go through that post, you can probably find out what will fit yours as well. After looking all over the web, I was shocked to find the exact size I wanted within my price range without having to order direct from the manufacturer. I had just about resigned myself to going with a "close but not ideal" set off ebay.
Once you find what size you want, go to discounttiredirect.com and you can search wheels by either bolt spacing, diameter, width, or a combination of all three. They list their wheels with offset, not backspacing, but there is a handy conversion chart here:

SPARKY69 Mar 6th, 09, 04:53 AM Good looking rims
77thor Mar 6th, 09, 05:03 AM Nice. They're kind of a modern update to the TT D's.
Microgiant Mar 6th, 09, 08:37 AM Once you get your wheels please let us know how well they fit and if anything rubs. Maybe post a pic or two. Thanks in advance.
VT67 Mar 6th, 09, 09:18 AM thanks steiner, what a great deal I just ordered a set to, they are accually having a $50 special today I got the same set up for my 67 for $914 shipped to vermont. Ill bet those prices dont last to long.thanks alot for the info, I was in a bit of a bind as I just did my disc brake upgrade, and my 14'' ralleys dont fit anymore so i was going to get a couple of junkyard wheels to move it around, but that price is to good to pass up. again thanks alot.

edhjohnb Mar 6th, 09, 07:09 PM Talk about surprises...I was finally about to pull the trigger on buying a set of rims and tires and had narrowed my choices to Foose Legends (chrome) or Torq Thurst II's (polished).
I saw these wheels (thanks to your post, Steiner ) and immediately fell in love with the gun metal gray (anthracite) version...I can't explain why I like them so much, especially since they're not even chrome or polished "shiny"!!! So next thing you know, I ordered a set through Brad at Discount (a great guy to work with) and they'll be here next week! Here's what I got for my 67 RS:
Front:
17x8 with +7 offset (4.75 bs)
Hankook 235/45/ZR17 tires
Rear:
17x9.5 with +6 offset (5.5 bs)
Hankook 275/40/ZR17 tires
This will be the first time since I had the car that the wheels and tires were anything but "rollers"...I'm pretty happy!!! :D
VT67 Mar 6th, 09, 07:16 PM nice, I went with the gun metal, my 67 is silver I think it will look nice, Im acually thinking of changing the bumble bee stripe too gun metal to accent the wheels. I think I was looking at the same wheels you were on ebay about $1226 shipped. I allmost pulled the trigger on them last night, glad I didnt.
VT67 Mar 6th, 09, 07:19 PM nice john thats the same setup I got

If they were the ones that were 17x8 with 4.5" backspacing than I bet we were looking at the same ones. The good thing about getting these is that they are better than "just close" and I have several Discount Tire stores close to me. I ordered them online though since they didn't charge sales tax, shipping was free, and they didn't list the Hankook tires on the site for the local stores.
Everyone else will have pictures and fitment info waaaayyyy before me. My car has been in storage for about six years and I'm still working on getting it running. I also went ahead and blew my bonus on the complete four-wheel power disc brake set, front and rear springs and shocks, complete poly suspension rebuild kit, tie rods and other front suspension stuff, and front and rear swaybars. So, there is a lot of crap that needs to happen before I mount the wheels and I only get to devote about a half day or so a week to my personal interests. I'm a little bit of an impulse buyer so I got hot in the crotch about going ahead and getting everything at once. Now that I've got it all, I'll probably get it started next week and it'll throw a rod across the street.
VT67 Mar 7th, 09, 05:48 AM yup, those were the same wheels. Ive pretty much just done everthing your getting ready to do, I still have my front end apart as im waiting on my upper adjustable control arms & tall balljoints.hopefully its all here by the end of next week so I can put it back together, although theres still 2' of snow here so it will be a wile yet before I can get it out. I will try to post some pics for ya as soon as I can .
Steiner Mar 11th, 09, 03:00 PM They're heeerrreeee. And they look schweet.
Gotta do the suspension rebuild and disc brake upgrade before I even bother mounting them though. Just need the wife to go visit her parents for the next, oh, eight weekends and I should be cool. If she hadn't been gone last weekend, the thing probably wouldn't even be running right now.

Ok guys, somebody call my doctor because I think my "excitement" is going to last over 4 hours!!! This is the first set of real wheels and tires I've had on this car since I got it and I am pumped!!! I know they might not appeal to everyone, but I'm really pleased. I didn't even take time to clean them up after shipping before I slapped them on to take some pics! Thanks again to Brad at Discount Tires for the awesome deal and great service.

Steiner Mar 12th, 09, 05:53 PM Man, they look good. You know, when I found that pic on the Challenger board I thought those were the gunmetal ones but they were anthracite. I had a feeling that the actual gunmetal ones would be machined edge and those look great. You've got me rethinking the chromes now. My '69 is Corvette yellow with chrome rocker trim and the shark gills so I think they'll still pop.
VT67 Mar 12th, 09, 06:03 PM Hey Steiner,
just got mine to, I put on my rears tonight. Man these are nice wheels I cant believe everbody isnt all over these. oh well, They fit eccellent on the rear, I am still waiting for my uca's but they should be here tommorro. I cant wait to set it on the ground on all fours to see what it looks like.

Thanks Steiner, and thanks again for finding these! I've always been a chrome guy and I don't know what made me pick these, but I guess I just wanted something a little different. I'm sure your chrome set will look absolutely awesome on your yellow 69...make sure to post some pics.

I know it. They just came out this year is the reason why I guess, plus you can't find pictures of them. Not even the local Discount Tire knew what they looked like. When I left my info for the guy to get back with me, I told him I wondered if they were like Torq Thrusts and he said he didn't think so and then asked me what I was looking for and showed me some other wheels. I told him I was set on a Torq Thrust style and figured I'd probably wind up having to pony up for the real thing, especially to get the right size. Well, once in awhile the stars all align. Once I found that pic on the Challenger board, I had my order complete in ten minutes.:D

Hey Rene, I don't know if these photos are what you're looking for, but I can tell you that in the brief time I've driven the car with these on, I haven't had any rubbing problems.

Do they rub your sub frame when you go lock 2 lock and do you have enough room on your 67 for more rubber in the back, I like the look but im lookin for maximum tire width out back and chances are if you have room for more tire so would I, thanks Joe

Hi Joe, and thanks. Yes, I seem to get a slight bump on the subframe when I go lock-to-lock. Also, since my front end is lowered 2" I need to be careful going up into driveways, etc. These are the only "fitment" issues I've discovered.
As far as more width in the rear, I think it's pretty much maxed out. If you haven't already seen it, you can check out the following thread for other wheels, sizes and fitment issues:

airtime Apr 24th, 09, 09:19 PM i'm looking at ordering the same thing. only chrome. my price has come out more than yaws. have they gone up since then? was there a special package or something. the 17 by 9.5 are 188 now and the 17 by 8 are 185. did yaw order the mounting kit that included the lug bolts? the hancook tires are about 100 a piece.

Yup, looks like the rim prices have gone up. Mine were $998 to my door with the chrome ones and Hankook Z-rated tires. I did not get the lug kit or tire replacement warranty. I bought a set of Gorilla locking nuts from Summit for $30 instead.
The tire I got no longer shows up on their system. However, the rim still shows up at the old price ($165 & $168) if you use discounttire.com which routes you to your local store. Odd. It was cheaper to get them delivered since I didn't have to pay sales tax, installation fees, or environmental fees.
Looks like if you want them, you're just going to have to cough up a few more bucks. They're still a good bit cheaper than anything I've found with a similar design.
airtime Apr 25th, 09, 06:12 PM i'll have to wait for a new sale. going to have it painted soon and that comes first. then the wheels
Ready2Go69 May 1st, 09, 10:47 AM I just order mine. Will be here Tuesday. $1006 to my door with centers and lugnuts. Discount tire said in the last weeks that lots of rim tire pkgs for 67-69 has been there HOT SELLER. Maybe they shoud send TEAM CAMARO a check for the good sales pitch. BK69 May 1st, 09, 04:55 PM Here's another shot of the Voxx old school wheels, picked up a few weeks ago at the old price. The pic is far off and not very good but this was at a car show at my son's school.
Microgiant May 2nd, 09, 05:38 PM I am concerned about rubbing in the rear with the 275 tires on a stock ride height 69 Camaro. Has anyone tried these can give a report? I dont want to order them then scrape up the rubber on my fenders etc.
Ready2Go69 May 6th, 09, 07:09 AM Just got my rims and tires in. They are one bad set of wheels.
I went with
Two 17x8 chrome, 7 offset (4.75" backspace)
Two 17x9.5 chrome, 7 offset (5.5" backspace)
Two Hankook 235/45-17
Two Hankook 275/40-17)
I have a 69 camaro stock ride height. The rear wheels have a slight rub on the inside on a aftermarket shock. This may go away when I get the car off of jack stands. Discount Tire Direct shipped my the front two wheels last Thursday. I ordered the chrome Old School but they shipped the grey powder coated wheels. I called and they quickly shipped the chrome replacement rims. Great customer service and very easy to deal with. These wheels look better in person than on the web site.
I will purchase from Discount Tire Direct in the future.
$1006 total centers and lug nuts included.:hurray:
69RSLS16SPD May 10th, 09, 11:33 PM I thought about getting some of these wheels myself but they are Coys C-55 that they have had for quite a while. The price of the MB wheels is a little less and the wheel and tire packages are a great deal at Discount Tire!

Steiner May 11th, 09, 11:57 PM For anyone sitting on the fence, the sale is back on.
$50 off any set of four rims.
$50 off any set of four rims or four tires if using the Discount Tire card.
$70 off four Michelin or BF Goodrich tires.

Just wanted to let you know I also REALLY liked the wheels ( + you cars  ) !! I finally ordered a set of Gunmetal 17" x 8" (4,75" BS) all the way round. I went with 234/45/17 tire in the front and 245/45/17 tire in the back. For the price they are a steal! My car will be painted Bolero Red so I hope they fit a red car as good as they fit a blue one.
Steiner, Thanks for you too! The chrome ones look really good with the yellow car!
jerseymike68 Oct 11th, 09, 05:03 AM Thanks for the info....:hurray:
Microgiant Oct 23rd, 09, 08:49 AM The best price I could get from them today was about $1100 including hardware. Im thinking of switching the tires to be Nitto 55 drag radials on the back and 55 extreme on the front. Any problem with 17" drag radials? Still havnt pulled the trigger.
The guy I talked to was a good salesman though. First thing he did was attempt an upsell to the Nitto Extreme. Actually I like that because had he just got me what I asked for I may not have been happy with those tires. It got me to thinking my car is not a canyon carver. So I asked about the drag radial.
Microgiant Oct 23rd, 09, 09:48 AM After months of trying to decide I pulled the trigger! Total cost 1175+tax. Texas AZ and CO all have to pay sales tax. Uncle Sam can buy himself 1/4 a gallon of high test gas in Afganistan with the $100 I paid in tax. Heres what I got.
Two 17x8 chrome, 7 offset (4.75" backspace)
Two 17x9.5 chrome, 7 offset (5.5" backspace)
Two Nitto 555 Extreme 245/45-17
Two Nitto 555r Drag Radial 275/40-17
Microgiant Oct 26th, 09, 09:18 PM Man they are fast! I ordered Friday and had them Monday. Its raining outside but I couldnt help seeing what they look like mounted. Mine are sticking out in the front so I might need to take them to discount tire. Im not sure I got the right offset. There cant be that much difference from 225 to 235.

Steiner Oct 26th, 09, 09:38 PM Looks good. You ought to do what I was too impatient to....take them off and clean them up before you drive on them and hit them with a good coat of polish or wax front and back so they clean up easier in the future.
You can check the offset yourself. You just need to cut a piece of wood short enough so that it'll go all the way across the rim but sit only on the rim edge. Then measure from the bottom edge of your piece of wood to the back of the rim hub or bolt facing.
Also, do you have discs or drums?
Microgiant Oct 27th, 09, 07:08 AM Im running stock disks up front. At this point Im willing to upgrade if it will move the wheels in some. I think someone makes A-arms that move the wheels in also.
I just discovered they sent me 245 front tires. We had aggreed upon 235 when he told me 225 was not an option. Im going to get them to change these for a smaller tire but I will still need to bring them in some. looking at other peoples rides (such as yours) they seem to tuck in real nice.
68RS-SS Oct 28th, 09, 10:53 AM There is a salesman there who sounds very knowledgable at first impression but wants to sell you the 245s and wrong offset for the fronts so approach with caution and don't let him talk you out of what has been confirmed to work and not work here on the site. He'll tell you that he does it all the time but don't believe him. For some reason he insists they work and sounds like he's not learning the lesson even after people keep returning them (like I did). Very strange...

I'm running Right Stuff discs on stock control arms. I would think our hub locations would be pretty close. Going with a 10mm wider tire shouldn't make it stick out that much further as it is only 5mm on each side. One other thing is that with those sizes your front tire is going to be slightly taller than your rear tire and the installed height may make it even a little more so.
I see what you mean...it looks like you could drop my front end and the fender lip would go over the tire whereas looking at yours it looks like it would sit on it. It's possible they sent you the wrong backspace so you'd have the reduced backspace plus the extra width of the tire adding up to over a half inch of "push out".
Steiner Nov 2nd, 09, 04:09 AM Im running stock disks up front.
Don't know if you've messed with this any more, but I had my rear tires off this weekend. The backspacing in inches is stamped on a pad in between the lug holes on the back side.
