View Full Version : 12 Bolt posi - thrust washers
mpaq Mar 9th, 09, 01:41 PM I know this has been posted b4, but the post are old, and hoping someone can tell me specifically (ideally with a pic) where these things actually go, and how i can get them in with out dissassembling any parts.
I was doing a drum to disk conversion and had to pull the axles to get the backing plates off....everything went great till i noticed these things had fallen out......
any advice is appreciated....thxs
VT67 Mar 9th, 09, 02:19 PM hey mike, they go between the small spider gears and the carrier.there not hard to get back in, I just had the same problem on a buddies chevelle. I believe they go in from the opposite side from which you remove the c clips. you may want to put a small dab of grease on them to keep them from falling out again when you rotate the carrier to put the pinion shaft back in, hope that helps
mpaq Mar 15th, 09, 08:15 AM thanks, i'll have another go at it
DOUG G Mar 15th, 09, 09:28 AM They go under the spider gears that the pin goes through. Easiest way I've found is to have someone hold one axle still while the other gets spun slowly. The gears with the pin out will spin out, you only need to get them out enough to slip in the washers, and spin them back in.... do NOT force them, have patients :D

Go to page 5-24 and it shows an exploded view of the rear...#13 is the shims.

thats sounds like helpful advice, i'll get a helper and give that a shot....your link doesnt work though, can you resend?
thanks!
big gear head Mar 16th, 09, 07:53 AM Be sure that you don't move the gears too far. There is a machined area inside the case that these gears run on. If you move the gears off of this area then you might have trouble getting them back on it. Just move the gears a little and you should be able to get the washers in place.

mpaq Mar 29th, 09, 11:28 AM thanks guys, it wasnt easy but with much patience I finally got them in. Its the shape of them that makes it difficult, i think if they were flat they would just slide right back in.
Now having done that, i was able to finish the brakes.
In mounting the wheels, i now notice my wheel studs should have been replaced with longer ones. I didnt even think of this when i trial fit everything, i was just looking for clearance issues. But now that i put the stock ralleys rims on, i notice that all the studs do not protude all the way through the nuts (a few do). It might be ok, and im leaving it for now, but ideally i guess I will have to essentially start again to pull the axles to get longer studs pressed in...now that i know what im doing its not that big of a deal, just more of a hassle to have to redo it....maybe there are different shaped nuts i could use that would help.....i cant believe i didnt check this to begin with, a tough lesson learned.
Dave Nelson Mar 30th, 09, 06:37 PM You should be able to change the studs without pulling the axles.

how do you do that, i thought they were pressed in?
Fred Ficarra Mar 31st, 09, 10:56 AM Mike, just position the new studs in place and tighten the lug nuts. They'll draw-up tight. No axle removal. Relax.
Oh, to get the old ones out, just wack 'em with a hammer.

thanks Fred, i thought wiser of banging on em, my luck i would bend the flange or axle but i guess they must come out easier than i thought.
DOUG G Mar 31st, 09, 02:47 PM Use some washers under the nut to help pull them in.
