Does anyone know where to get a period correct (1967) 350 ci engine? Considering a project with my son and have found a 67 RS SS 350 car with no engine. I may just get a crate engine but thought I would at least see if the original parts were available and at what cost difference.

A crate engine would be cheaper in the long run... and maybe even more dependable.

Search ebay and craigslist. Engines are always for sale, maybe even a '67 350 Camaro engine. The only thing with 67 Camaro 350 engines, is that they were all SS engines, and matching numbers folks will pay for that. I think that unless you are willing to spend big bucks, you would be time and money ahead with a crate engine. I rebuilt a Big Block that came with my car when I bought it, and just the machine shop fees was $2,500. That included new pistons and rings and gaskets and such, but most of the cost was machining. Just something to think about.

You may find it to be more trouble than it's worth.

In the 67 model year, only the Camaro received the 350, which was also a new thing. It was a large journal (or medium journal, depending what you read) engine. The same casting number was used for other displacements like 327, but the cranks were not the same and had different (small) journals.

So, if you find a 67 350, it will be an SS350 Camaro engine. Sometimes these sell for significantly more than a regular run of the mill mid-70s 350.

Some good reading in these threads:

Heck, you can post (or just search) your partial VIN (7Nxxxxxx or 7Lxxxxxx) here and on the CRG 1967 orphans forum ( http://www.camaros.org/forum/ ); maybe your original block is out there. A few have been reunited here and there.

Here's a 67 Camaro 327 210hp shortblock for sale. You would have to verify the casting codes and vin pad to determine if it's real, but that would be a good choice.

You could build a 327 to look exactly like a 350.Only you would know the difference.

Search either the periodical Hemmings from the local bookstore, or maybe Wally Mart, or
www.hemmings.com

I do remember somebody in the pub has date correct blocks.

Wow, thanks. That might be a great short, or long, term solution. It comes with a tranny but do not know what the tranny is. I am following up with the seller.

I am in the same boat. To get started though I bought a 67 327 engine from Chad (67 Plum) and it looks identical. I will use it until I can find a date correct block, and they are out there. You can expect to pay $500 to $1,000 for one that is rebuildable.

Once you start pricing around, if you are not hung up on the originality issue for now, a crate motor cannot be beat.
