View Full Version : Headers look like crap sako Mar 10th, 09, 05:04 PM My headers look old and rusty. Should i buy new ones or can i take them off, sand them and repaint them? What kind of heat resistant paint can i use for headers? TraxUnderground Mar 10th, 09, 05:09 PM If you like them have them Jet-Hot coated. They will look like a millon bux and reduce heat. We get a discount on their coatings. EC's 327 Mar 10th, 09, 05:10 PM How much does that cost? TraxUnderground Mar 10th, 09, 05:21 PM Not real sure...call them and ask them..... then after they give you a price tell them you are a Team Camaro member and you geta 20% discount. Thats what they gave me but I bought my hooker headers through them already coated.. it may not be cheap but they are gonna last forever and will coat them again if there are any issues down the road. Check them out http://www.jet-hot.com/ speedfreek Mar 10th, 09, 07:25 PM Sand blast and paint them with this, Eastwood hi-temp silver. It lasts for years without turning, flaking, peeling or anything else! I use it on everything; http://www.eastwoodco.com/images/us//local/products/detail/p9280.jpg 67SS/RSCONV Mar 10th, 09, 08:06 PM X2 on Eastwood coating. Steiner Mar 10th, 09, 08:46 PM Crucial Racing is well known in the turbo world and can coat stuff with their proprietary heat coating inside and out or heat dispersant (radiators, intercoolers, etc). There are guys who run their coated downpipe and say you can put your hand on it momentarily after running the car. Considering that a turbo exhaust can hit 1300F, that's not too shabby. Lifetime warranty and reasonable cost. www.crucialracing.com zdld17 Mar 11th, 09, 05:42 AM If you have old headers that are rusty and aged, I would not coat them eventhough many people do for ecomonic reasons. Considering the metal loss by blasting them would just make the tubes thinner. I am not sure if the coating itself adds any strength but I would think the final coated tubing would be less rigid than if you began with a new set. You did not state how old or rusty your tubes were. I had a set of hookers for 10 years and coated since new, absolutely no rust or metal loss anywhere I could see. You really get your moneys worth when you have new headers coated. sako Mar 11th, 09, 03:53 PM I will post some pics of my headers soon as i get them. Any recommendations for headers for a 350 that fits perfectly without taking the mallet to it? Its for my 69, 350 bored to a 383 stroker. The headers i have on right now have been modded to clear the steering box. Please attach some links and pics. Thanks guys. I just got in the Summit Racing ceramic coated headers which are on sale now for $170. They are branded as "Summit Racing" but I think they are either FlowTech or Dynomax. They look pretty good and are supposed to fit a '69 small-block with straight plugs, power steering, power brakes, and floor shifted manual which is what I have. I hope to get them installed this weekend so I'll let you know. If you've got angle plugs, let me know and I won't bother as they specifically say they won't fit. Also, they're 1-5/8" primaries and I wouldn't know if that's enough for your setup with the supercharger and all. I held up the driver's side to kind of eyeball it and one thing I did notice is that the 3-5 and 2-4 pipes are routed better than my current ones are for accessing the plugs. DenRS Mar 12th, 09, 06:27 AM Get new headers. I had mine dynomax headers jet hot coated. Cost me around 300 or so. Shipping is killer. When I got them back, jet hot did a great job, but I thought the blasting process would remove pot marks etc, however it didn't. So my headers are not smooth like a new set would be. I could have ordered the same headers with a cermanic coating from summit for about $40 more. 67SS&99SS Mar 12th, 09, 08:46 AM I've sand blasted the old Mr. Gasket headers I had on my 350 and painted them with Alumidust. I got it from Ricks Camaro. The can of paint cost $20 bucks and its still on the headers 9 years later. Aaron67 Mar 12th, 09, 10:43 AM Ditto on the summit brand headers, although I cheaped out and got the painted ones, but hey, for $85 you can't beat it, and they fit fine without any "persuading". 350/4 speed/pwr steering. just sandblast yours and paint 'em with some parts store "very high temperature" paint or whatever it's called. the 1500 degree stuff. i've used it, seems to hold up pretty well. maybe $8/can or so? or you can spring for the fancy stuff, to each their own. sako Mar 27th, 09, 11:24 AM Ok guys, finally had some time to take some pics of my headers. Tell me if its worth painting them or should a get a new pair. Also the car does not sound like the way i like it. It has dual Elderbrock mufflers with i think like 2.5 " pipes. I like to go with some flowmasters. Which header and muffler combo do you guys recamend for a 69 that breathes and sounds like a beast. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/sakona/1-1.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/sakona/2-1.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/sakona/3-1.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/sakona/4-1.jpg ddx77 Mar 27th, 09, 12:29 PM Mine looked alot like those, I ended up selling them on Ebay for $175. and buying new ones. In hindsight I probably should have had the old ones blasted and repainted highheat black and focused the money that I spent on the new ones on other items my car could use. I am with you though, I hated the way my old ones looked everytime I opened my hood I got aggrevated. JMO kcart55 Mar 27th, 09, 01:18 PM I've got a pair of S.S Headers in the classified :D 69 SKUNK Mar 27th, 09, 01:42 PM I'd get a new set. Can't see putting any more $ in a set that the #3 tube is half pinched off. JMO chuckboy7 Mar 27th, 09, 02:27 PM kcar can you post some pics of the sst headers. how do they look after they have been used for awhile? I was thinking about going that way but worried about bluing. Steiner Mar 27th, 09, 08:42 PM Here's the thread with pics of the ceramic coated Summit Racing brand ones I just test fitted on a '69 with smallblock, Muncie, power steering, and (soon) power brakes. They fit great, only cost $170, and NO DIMPLES!! I'm willing to bet that they are made by Dynomax and they come with all gaskets, all hardware, and a set of weld-on reducers for your exhaust. The only thing they state they WON'T fit is angle plug heads, manual with column shift, or A/C cars so going by your pics it looks like you'd have no problem. My exhaust is the Flowmaster American Thunder 2-1/2" system. I'm in the process of putting a couple of eBay flex joints after the collectors to take some of the rigidity out of the system. http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=153270 By the way, I'm sick of seeing your signature with the "383 stroker and Weiand supercharger" and getting jealous. Is that how you got them?is it supposed to be like that? Steiner Apr 3rd, 09, 08:18 PM Steiner, Looking at your pics over and over, they look great. But, i noticed a dent(pinch) on your first pipe, driver side headers on the second pic. Is that how you got them?is it supposed to be like that? Yup. They are untouched by me and fit fine. I think the dent is preformed for clearance when using a straight plug boot on the number 3 cylinder. I use Accel shorty plugs and all 90 degree boots as I'm sure you do as well. sako Apr 9th, 09, 11:54 AM Stainer, You have a item number for those headers from summit?
