Probably a couple of things
1st would be a vacuum leak, maybe a hose or plug got disconnected from the carb.
2nd fuel filter may be gummed up with old gas jell.
3rd plugged up jets, carb is full of junk.

Sitting that long and with the headers getting red hot...I'd also look for a nest from mice or bees in the exhaust.

I had the same thing happen with my Camaro. It sat for quite some time and I syphoned the fuel out of it and ran it in my other car(93 Buick Roadmaster TBI). It barely made it to the station. I would start by getting some fresh fuel and go from there.

Red hot glowing headers could be an indication of the engine running too lean from a dirty and/or misadjusted carburetor!

That is indeed a lean condition:yes:. Try the suggestions listed above in regards to the fuel, then post back with your results:yes:.

Severely retarded ignition timing will make the headers glow red, and would also explain the inability to idle. 42 years is a long time for a car to be sitting, BTW.

I think he meant: for 2 years not four 2 years. :D
