View Full Version : Drum / Disk 68 SS 396 did they ever have drums on the front Warwick129 Mar 11th, 09, 03:59 AM Hi Can anyone tell me if any 68 SS 396 Camaro ever came out with drum brakes on the front or is the a dead give away that that it was originally a 350 Sauron67MM Mar 11th, 09, 04:24 AM Warwick, Yes, discs were optional except for Z/28. In fact, my brother had a 68 SS 396 w/ finned front drums. http://www.camaros.org/suspen.shtml#Brakes Everything you wanted to know and more at CRG (Camaro Research Group) http://www.camaros.org/index.shtml Eric Kammerer Mar 11th, 09, 04:42 AM Scott answered your question, but I figured I'd link directly to the CRG page for identifying the different models for 1968: http://www.camaros.org/diffs68.shtml Welcome to Team Camaro Warwick! SPARKY69 Mar 11th, 09, 05:00 AM Welcome to team camaro warick!!!!!!!!!!! It was very rare for a ss 396 car to have drums..most were optioned with disc brakes do to the added weight and it was part of the upgraded package too!! Fred Mertz Mar 11th, 09, 05:53 AM I have seen one years ago. It was a 396/325hp 4 speed car. I don't recall at this time if it was power drum or not. I helped the guy put Hi-jackers on it! Dave mb302rs Mar 11th, 09, 06:46 AM My BB 68 project has power finned front drums . 3SuperSports Mar 11th, 09, 10:23 AM My wife's '68 had power front drums (with fins as mentioned) They're huge compared to the rears. I upgraded them with SSBC front disks. rare4k Mar 11th, 09, 08:34 PM I dont think it,s RARE to find drum brakes on SS BB cars, Most of the 375 hp cars I have docs on are drum cars. the disc was an option, and alot of the hi horse cars were raced and there is no drag on drum brakes like there is on discs SY1 Mar 11th, 09, 11:19 PM Like Scott already pointed out correctly, the only 68 model that ever came with front disc brakes as part of the option package was the Z/28. All SS cars had drums unless the owner elected to purchase disc brakes. In 69 this changed. |
