: Retrofit hyd lifters
vmatt350 Mar 11th, 09, 06:37 PM Can someone who has heard an engine run with the Comp Cams retrofit hydrolic roller lifters tell me what they thought?
I have a slight knock in my engine that goes away after the engine temp gets to about 180*. Comp Cams is telling me its normal for them to make a noise and my engine builder is on the fence as to it being normal or not.
Thanks!
Sorry, I just read a post about putting more of a discription in the title. I should have added "noisy".
yellow heap Mar 11th, 09, 07:23 PM Mine make some racket(Comp cam) but I think it's the cam design more than a lifter issue.
What cam?
Also On mine It's not a knocking noise but more of a clattering like a sewing maching getting ready to give up the ghost.
vmatt350 Mar 12th, 09, 02:00 PM The cam is a 510/520 lift; 230/236 @.050 with 110 lobe sep. I have 1.5RRs.
I wish there was someone around here that had the same thing so I could compare. I guess mine could be described the same way.
RJBaileyrn Mar 12th, 09, 02:43 PM I'd go with the idea that it is cam design. I have the Comp Cams XE274H, and it is so noisy, people think I have a solid lifter cam.

vmatt350 Mar 12th, 09, 02:51 PM Thats what I am leaning toward. If there was a problem would it still accelerate nice and smooth or would I feel a stumble?
The car runs pretty good and I get a lot of compliments on it but when people look at the engine the first thing they ask after saying its nice looking is whats that noise. I would like to say with confidence that its normal.
RJBaileyrn Mar 12th, 09, 02:55 PM i understand completely, but i suspect that after you eliminate any issues, the engine will always be noisy with that cam. My car runs 12.60s with the 274H cam, and there is more to be gained I think, but the engine IS noisy.

vmatt350 Mar 12th, 09, 02:58 PM Thanks for your repliy. You are making me feel better about it.
BillK Mar 12th, 09, 07:32 PM I have a slight knock in my engine that goes away after the engine temp gets to about 180*.
Matt,
I have heard that the XE cams can be noisy but ..... I would expect the noise to be worse after the engine warmed up, not better. Plus, like the others have said, it is more like a "clatter" rather than a knock. Without hearing it its hard to say, but it sounds more like a piston slap problem ? Might want to find an unbiased third "ear" to listen to it.
JimM Mar 12th, 09, 07:39 PM Mine knocks. And it is a lifter for sure, actually sounds like just one. Very loud. Goes away completely as soon as the temp gauge starts to climb, before I've driven half a mile. When it goes away, it just flat stops. it will sound like a pushrod is about to come thru the hood, and go comepltely silent in an instant.
Car runs very strong, and revs to 7k without complaint.
VooDoo HR and lunati/morel lifters. Done it since I put the retro roller setup in.
BPOS Mar 13th, 09, 09:20 AM I have what is essentially the same cam as the original poster , what amounts to Comp XR282HR, but in a factory roller block. The valvetrain is kinda noisy, but not horribly so.
cc82z-28 Mar 13th, 09, 06:54 PM Mine make the same noise and yes they are noisier than flat tappet hydrualics. I am using a Trick Flow retro hydraulic roller cam with .563"/.574" lift and Comp Cams retro roller lifters and Comp Cams Pro Magnum full roller lifters and took some geting used to for sure. I went back several times to make sure I had them adjusted properly and they are, so I am ok with it. The car runs strong and hard through the rpm's. Talked to an engine builder friend and he said mine sounded normal.
vmatt350 Mar 13th, 09, 07:00 PM My engine should be getting rebuilt this week (see my other posts) so it will be a good time to check things out.
