View Full Version : Industrial Small block Chevy
J Stone Mar 12th, 09, 03:13 PM I have been offered a 327 cid engine, all I have to do is pick it up. Said it ran fine when he pulled the engine and disposed of the farm equiptment.
The person that offered me the engine sais it was a " Chevrolet industrial engine" that was in one of his pieces of farm equiptment, posssibly a baler of some sort. Anybody ever hear on this type of small block Chevy ?
John:confused:

Maybe a 4 bolt main 327? Let us know! I bet its got a steel crank in it.
Gambitt Mar 12th, 09, 03:27 PM I don't think a 4 bolt main 327 was ever manufactured by Chevrolet.
Everett#2390 Mar 12th, 09, 03:44 PM Maybe a self-propelled combine as most brands of balers used Wisconsin V4's.
Economics, who could supply an engine with the torque needed by any of the equipment manufacturers. Allis Chalmers at one time used Plymouth polyspherical 318 CID V8's for their Gleaner combines.

True!
Clark forklift company once used 318's in their bigger/higher capacity forklifts. Some newer ones use GM 4.3 v6's.
tilley88 Mar 12th, 09, 05:31 PM One of my first circle track engines came out of a 1968 Gleaner combine. It was a 4-bolt main hi-nickel 350 block with an 1182 steel crank.
Vintage 68 Mar 12th, 09, 06:37 PM The 'industrial' line of GM engines are basicly truck engines.
They differ slightly from their automotive and other, like 'marine', application cousins in their cam specifications, intake types (some), ignition and controls systems.
Other than those changes they are just standard HD assemblies and can be used and built the same way you would any other engine.
If it is a 327 engine it WILL NOT have 4-bolt mains, but it should be a thick web block and will be just as strong for a good street engine as a later, thin-webbed, 350 casting.
They can also often have really good internals, like forged cranks and good rods, that can be used for a mild street motor.
I see these engines in many stationary use situations also, we have several "Vortec" 4.3, 5.7 & 8.1-L's driving 'Z'-power generators and back-up pump assemblies on site.
You can also find them in many off-road uses other than Agriculture - like lift trucks, logging equipment and other equipment from big manufactures like Hyster ;)
I'd snag it since it is free and tear it down to have a look
