I installed a Hurst Quarter Stick in my factory console.........

I didnt like the plastic cover(flimsy and cheap appearing)so I made a boot out of some scrap leather from an upholstery shop. Only modification required is a bracket mounted to the transmission tunnel which the shifter sets on giving it the proper height in the console(didn't like the look of half of the shifter setting below the opening of the console).

I mounted a Lokar shifter in my 67console....you could do the same in a 69 I would assume.

I installed a B&M Hammer Shifter in mine. I created the custom plate using the original plate for the outer shell(cut out the inside) and some sheet metal from Ace Hardware. Using some thick posterboard for stencils and trial-and-error fitting you should be able to come up with something pretty slick. You can see some pictures of mine here.
