: Header mods. - what would you do?

Hello all,

I was messing with a Header calculator program not too long ago. It said that I need 1&5/8 headers with 36" long primary tubes with 14" collectors that are 2.5" in diameter for my 327. The header described above should maximize my low/midrange torque (according to the calculator). As you can guess, these are "ideal world" figures and no commercial manufacturer makes such a header.

The closest match I can find would be to get a set of Dynomax un-coated headers and have the 3" collectors removed and a set of 2.5" dia. long collectors welded on.

Is the above described header modification worth the effort/expense? Or should I just buy the Dynomax coated headers and just live with it as is.

Looking for opinions.

Thanks,
Mark P. - AKA"Granny"

I just put a set of the dynomax coated (by jethot) on my 68, 1-5/8 primary unequal lengths 3" collector, nice pieces, especially for the $ (the coating on these is better than on my hooker super comps also done by jethot for my 94 Z28)
the fit is nice, there are a couple of plugs that aren't easy to get too, but not all that bad

If I were going to cut up a set of headers to replace the collectors I'd weld on a set of the four-into-two,two-into-one collectors. I think Flowmaster makes them - the BSE combo's use them too. You have to start with headers that are the right tube diameter and as close as you can get to the right tube length.

Just my opinion.

ps. If you really want the max perf out of your headers I'd look into a set of Thorley headers or Headers by Ed. Someone that doesn't mass produce headers and builds pipes that fit your car and are truly equal length.

Definately check out the headers from Doug Thorley. I have used a set of his tri-y's since 1989, and I have been more than impressed with the product. You can also call and have them pulled off the line (before nickel plating) and shipped to you, so if you wanted to get them coated with whatever you wont have to pay the cost of the removal of the nickel.

They fit REALLY nice. The collector is higher than the sub frame, so no scrape's!!

If you want MAX performance out of a header, and you want it tuned perfectly to your combo, look no farther then Jere Stahl or Ed Hanneman (headers by ed).
I would think that your not interested in spending $800-$1000+ on a set of headers, so instead my suggestion, as Eric68 mentioned would be to use the Flowmaster 4-2-1 collectors, since they will be an extension to the primary tubes.
You can build a collector extension on to that also.
This would be the most cost effective way to get the results your Looking for IMO.

Ya know, if money were no object, Stahl or Butler would be my choise. I currently use a Butler built set.

My reply just filled in the spec's of what he was looking for and they are affordable by all means.

I use a set of prebent primaries, cut off the collectors, make extension tubes, and add a slip-on merge collector. Here's a side I'm doing for my 66 sedan. The old piece is a shorter version.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies. Thanks to Eric68 for reminding me about Thorley headers. Although Thorley headers are a little pricey, their TRI-Y headers come close to what the header calculator says should work best on my 327.

I will have to check with Thorley about wheather or not their headers can be used with my factory A/C setup. Although my A/C setup doesn't currently work, I would like to keep it intact and repair it someday. Hopefully they make an adapter.

Also a thanks to Chacane67 for his report on his Thorley headers. It sounds like they hold up very well.

Take care,

I went to Doug's web and the application list says the camaro header is for automatic only(?). I haven't called to see if it's a partial listing.

Hey Guys,

BTW, any idea how much it costs to have a set of headers ceramic coated? I prefer the ceramic coated look over the nickel plated look.

I had a set of Thorleys pulled off the line before the nickel plating and sent them to a local shop that did them for about $225.00 (shop price). I think Jet and a few others are a little more, but not by much.
