There is a truck that has a good engine, and it's selling for a good price, but I can't read the number to well. I know it has a 39700 but I can't make out the last digit or digits. Mortec says is can be a 302,350, or a 307. I know a 302 can be made a 350, but what about the 307? Can you make that a 350?

The 307 has a 3.875 in. bore which I beleive is the same as a 283.

The 302, 327 and 350 all have a 4.00 in. bore

you can't make a 350 out of a 307 and as stated above the 307 is just a stroked 283.

Technically, you can make a 350 out of a 307. Bore the block to 4.00" and add a 350 Recip. Assembly, and you have a 350. The drawback is, that's an awfully big overbore for a 307, and the chances of ruining the block are good.

I've heard that some of the old 307 castings are actually thick enough to bore to 4.00", but like BPOS said, you take a big risk of ruining the block and I would NEVER use a block bored that much for ANY type of high perf use.

If its in a truck, its NOT a 302 so based on your casting number info you have either a 350 or 307. Do you know if the engine is original to the truck? If so you might be able to find out if that year/model truck came with a 307 or not. 350 and 305's I think are most common in Chevy trucks.

The truck had a 4-bolt 350 in it. They took it out and put a new engine in it. They took the crank and cam out of the 350 4-bolt. I don't know if they used it on the new block. The 4-bolt was left outside uncovered and has the pistons stuck because of all the rust. Do you think that rusted block would be good for a rebuild? I think the engine just might be a 350. I'll take another look today to see if I can't make out the last numbers.

If the last two number's are 10, you've a good casting numbered block. The 3970010 is a good GM block. I've got 4 of these blocks, three are 4 bolts and one is a 2 bolt.
