View Full Version : Hotcam conversion
helpfulgurl Feb 9th, 04, 06:05 PM I am trying to help my boyfriend who has a great 1995 Camaro but is not computer savy. He wants to do an LT1 to LT4 Hotcam conversion but just has a few questions before he goes through the cost of all the parts and the trouble of doing the work himself. He would like to know how much of an increase in horsepower it will give him, how it will effect the fuel consumption and if he will have to reprogram the computer. If anyone could help me with this or if anyone knows where I could find this info it would be appreciated.
Thanks
novaderrik Feb 9th, 04, 10:20 PM if he also gets the LT4 heads and intake, and a free flowing intake and exhaust setup, he will have about 430hp. cost will be in the $2500 range for parts, and the computer needs to be programmed. you can get a complete kit from a few places with al lthe hardware to do the swap, and the same places can also do the computer programming. fuel consumption will be decent if driven nice- maybe a little less than the stock LT1- but crappy if he has a lead foot.
fast Feb 10th, 04, 01:34 PM the lt4 kit is considered a waste by most of those in the know
the hot cam is a nice piece, a bit small
no matter what get some programming
there are many places that can do a nice mail order tune
I DO NOT consider ed wright (fastchips) to be one of them
hit http://www.ls1speed.com
call 'em and ask for jim moran (tell him that fastz28 from the MFBA sent ya to them)
67rs6sdd Feb 10th, 04, 01:39 PM try this link and go to the lt1 tec section or do a seach on the site for the hot cam you'll get more info then you want http://web.camaross.com/forums/index.php?s=5f5d216340a053c24f204387288d17d1
best price should be around $470 for the kit
Novaguy73 Feb 10th, 04, 04:31 PM Tell your B/F that the "Hot Cam" is luke warm at best. It just kills me that GM has the cahonas to call this a hot cam. I never thought id say this, and you can all mark it down on your calendar, but im sure Cah...Cahhm.... Comp cams {there i said it} has a much better grind for the stock LT1 for similar or less $$$. Oh and as far as heads go, look through the AFR catalog, they have a great selection on this stuff. Good luck, have fun.
BPOS Feb 11th, 04, 06:14 AM Don't get too hung up on the name - that cam runs hard. While there are certainly bigger and badder cams out there, in a well matched package the Hot cam is an excellent choice. It makes an honest and verifiable 430 HP in a low compression 350 with a smooth idle.
Tepid? Hot? Just words!
novaderrik Feb 11th, 04, 10:27 AM the LT4 setup- cam and heads- might not make the most horsepower or whatever- but it is a proven combo if you want something that you know will work together. while that will work for 99.9% of the population, there are those out there that think if you leave 5 horsepower on the table, it is a waste pf money. but, honestly, in the typical street driven late model Camaro- are you REALLY gonna miss those last few horses? probably not.
i can personally verify that the HOT cam is a good street cam- with a carb, it has a nice silky smooth idle at 800 rpm with 15" of vacuum, and it makes power up to about 6500 rpm. gets 15 mpg in my nova that has 3.70 gears and no overdrive, as well. well tuned efi can only be better. plus, for the $500 you send for the cam package- you get parts that would add up to near $700 if you went with a "better" aftermarket cam. throw in the heads and the rest of the LT4 package, and you have added 150 more reliable horsepower to a stock LT1 for $2500. not a bad eal at all.
fast Feb 11th, 04, 02:33 PM my personal opinion on an LT1 is the following
send your stock heads (or another LT1 set) to Phil @ http://www.advancedinduction.com/
for the cam either have Phil spec you out (basically comp grinds) or go with a 224/230-ish range comp extreme grind
don't be shy of shortie headers, I love the MACs
cats if required, a nice cat-back (your choices here are nearly endless, pick the sound you like, the hp won't vary enough to notice)
get a cold air induction kit (moroso, k&n, lpe; stay away from g2 and jet)
a 52mm tb is a nice addition (if $ allows)
24# stock injectors are good to a fair hp level
tuning is a must!
do all the free mods that can be found on camaroz28.com or lt1tech.com
season to taste (i.e. street, strip, auto-X)
and enjoy the hell out of your LT1
