View Full Version : 97 z28 oil pressure problems Dant97 Mar 23rd, 09, 12:01 PM has anybody had oil pressure problems with a 4th gen z28 before. my 97 is starting to have problems. while im driving its down about 20 pounds and if im just sitting there idling it slowly just goes down to zero victimizati0n Mar 23rd, 09, 02:11 PM first off you are going to have to put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on there and see if your stock gauge is right im betting your gauge is wrong, because driving oil pressure should be between 18-24psi and idle should be around 6psi DjD Mar 23rd, 09, 03:25 PM Check your oil right off and make sure it's at the right level and not a couple qts low. Your guage sounds like it's working and may or may not be flaking out. Good advice to check the pressure with a known good mechanical guage as well. If you have enough oil and the guage is right it sounds like a bearing problem. When my mains went the pressure would build like normal but as I held the rpm steady the pressure dropped. Reving it would bring pressure back up but steady rpm and it dropped again. zbo2 Mar 23rd, 09, 07:00 PM put the mechanical gauge on and see what you have. could be that the sending unit is at fault. how many miles does the motor have on it? most small block chevys with the stock oil pumps should have about 15 psi at idle when hot and 40 to 60 when above 2500 rpm. Dant97 Mar 23rd, 09, 10:30 PM its got about 135000 67SS&99SS Mar 24th, 09, 02:13 PM higher milage LT1s are known for low oil pressure, but I would start to worry about what you posted. My uncle's 94 LT1 Z has 115K miles and at idle, it has around 8-10 psi and while driving he's close to 40 PSI. I use 10w40 mobil one and a AC delco filter. What weight oil/filter are you using currently? If low oil pressure is the problem(rather than the gauge/sending unit) you could put some 40 weight mobil one in it and try that. A few of my friends have ran it in the past in their high milage LS1 motors without an issue. arocars Mar 27th, 09, 08:16 AM I had a 94 z28 and was concerned about low oil pressure at idle. I did some research and found the stock oil pressure at idle was low, something like 6psi or less. After that I stopped worrying about it and never had a problem. |
