Are the brass ends on the fiber optic cable called eyelets or ferrules? I need some. Does anyone know where I can buy them? Thanks

as in cable wireing you can get them at radio shack.

The fiber optics I'm looking for have strands that transmit light. They would be part of the option U46 Lamp Monitor System.

Carl,

The brass ends are all but impossible to find. I have looked high and low.

I have successfully used aluminum pop rivet collars for this purpose. Grab a rivet, push to post out of it, and insert the cable into the rivet body. You may need to lightly drill the cable to fit, but it will go. The edge of the rivet body locks into the vigilite assembly perfectly, and will never rust.

I don't know about the Camaro houses. However, Corvette Central has them. I had to replace the entire fiber optic system on the Vette and I ordered the ferrules and lenses from them. They also offer a fiber optic strand rrepair kit. Hope this helps a little.

I have the Vigilite system on my car and I ordered the ferrules (in various sizes) from a company called Rod Lites (IIRC).

As an interesting side note...when I was trying to find the the correct fiber optic cable (Crofon) to restore my system I had googled everything I could about Crofon.

I ended up finding out the name of the inventor (his name escapes me now) of Crofon who developed the stuff while working at DuPont. He had since retired, but I googled his name along with Crofon and I found a blog entry that had been updated by his wife. After getting their phone number (another miracle of the internet) I decided to give him a call. When he answered, it was like "Umm.....you don't know me, but I'm looking for the inventor of Dupont Crofon".

Long story short, I had a great conversation with the guy and he told me all about the invention and installing the first set on his regional vp's Cadillac. He even sent me about 30' of some Crofon that he said he had laying down in the basement.

Good idea with the pop rivet. I have all kind of rivets, even copper. Now how about the ends that have a double collar on them? I have drilled the prick punch crimp that holds them on the cable. They are reuseable. I would love to find these. Check this web site out--www.demseymfg.com let me know what you think. The search is what its all about. I love this hobby.

Thanks Carl,

Check this one out for the cable. They appear to sell it in reels, and its the correct plastic cable, although does not say CROFON on it. The site you provided looks like something there would work.

Thanks Bob.

I have their web site. I know there are two sizes of the fibers in the system. Can you hook me up on what I should get. I just bought those lenes from you. Great product. Still looking for one rubber housing that sits under the chrome bezel. Don't laugh but I have looked everwhere and ever box, shelf. tool box, storage container 40' long, garage top and bottom. Still can't find that missing pc. Talk about the needle in the haystack.

I think that I have a couple of extra rubber housings if you can't find yours. I'll try to remember to look tonight when I get home.

Thanks Bob.

That would be great cowboybob. These are the housings that sit under the chrome bezels on the fenders. The fiber optic cables plug into them. Thanks.

Bob! Stories on any web site, don't get better than this!:p
I remember when the stuff came out. There wasn't a 'use' for it. But it was in my science weekly in the fifth grade. When was that??? 1957 or so. It was called Fiber optics then too.
Hey, did you guys know that fiber optics was standard equipment on every 1969 Camaro ever made? Yep. The ashtray light.

I thought the ash tray light was part of Z23 Interior Accent Group.

Fred,

That sounds about right. Burt (I went through my notes to find the inventor's name) told me that he was real nervous about putting the system on his vp's Cadillac because he (Burt) didn't know diddly squat about cars and he wasn't sure if the system would work right. He was afraid that he was going to cut these holes in the fenders of a brand new car and then get fired if the system didn't work.

Carl,

I found my original rubber housings. They are in great shape (not brittle and no tears or splits)...just need to be cleaned up a little bit and have new lenses put in.

Considering the rarity of these pieces, I will sell them to you for the astronomical price of nothing, but you have to pay shipping. Let me know if you need them and you can PM me your mailing address.

Take care,
Brian

Not quite. The only way you could get the ashtray light was if you separately ordered the ZJ7 Auxiliary Lighting Group, which wasn't part of any other option; it included the ashtray light, courtesy lights (on a coupe), underhood light, trunk light, and (unless you had the deluxe interior), the glove box light.

:beers:

My car was standard interior with Z23 interior accent group. When I received it, (in pieces, but most original wiring still in place) it had the ash tray light, but no evidence of trunk light or underhood light, There were no underhood courtesy lights, but I never looked for holes under the dash where they once might have been fastened....just for fun, I think I'll go look.
I guess someone could have installed the ashtray light, but that seems unlikely. Not challenging, John, but my car does not seem to fit with his comment about the ZJ7 option. It's an October 69 build, if that matters.

John, you are such an animal.;)

But still, I don't recall a single reference to the ashtray fiber optic cable when the light groups were detailed. But it's old memory. Hang on, I'll check my manual. Of course that's not as reliable as you.
